Re: Queuing any bottles up for Christmas?

As a prelude to Christmas dinner, started with 2010 A J Demiere “Egreg’Or” Champagne. It’s 100% Pinot Meunier. Lovely stuff rich and lively with a very different profile from most other Champagnes. Many have heard me say that I like about 17 different styles of Champagne and this is one of them. Wit...

Re: Corked 00 Leo B, Flat 00 Sociando, Good 02 Jadot Clos Vouge

Opened a bottle of 1982 Sociando Mallet about a month ago, it was a bit on the green side but very nice. It smoothed out a bit over the evening. We didn’t finish the whole bottle and it was even better the next night. Certainly a wine built to last. Same thing happened at a 1982 horizontal in Januar...

Re: Queuing any bottles up for Christmas?

Thanks, BD - Merry Christmas to all. As for me, I have no idea what I will be opening tomorrow - I don’t plan that far ahead. For example, tonight I thought about several different wines before I decided on the 1996 Pontet Canet. Always have about 20 bottles standing up and ready to go with a moment...

Re: What are we drinking in lockdown?

With Christmas Eve dinner, 1996 Pontet Canet. Wow, this is really great wine into its early prime drinking window - also the first BWE wine of the year (Oops, it was the 1996 Sociando Mallet, not Pontet Canet that was the first BWE wine of the year) A solid 94 points tonight.

There was also a collapse of some shelving a couple months ago but only lost one bottle - a nice Champagne worth about $80, not a major disaster.

About 10 years ago, I dropped a bottle of 1990 Haut Brion on the concrete floor of the basement - so sad but there was a fabulous aroma wafting around for a couple weeks. Also lost a bottle of Alsatian 1990 SGN in a similar manner. That was sad but not anywhere as bad as the Haut Brion. Chris Bublitz

What to drink with fried chicken and crispy skin salmon

Rose Champagne of course - Vilmart Cuvée Rubis. This was a wonderful match - November 2016 disgorgement 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. The idea for this match comes from David White, author of But First Champagne. By the way, this is a fabulous Champagne that was around $70.

Noah, Didn’t think about fortified wines in my choice (still think 1959 Latour was the best wine I’ve ever had) but I must say that 1827 Quinta do Serrado Bual and Henriques & Henriques Grand Old Bual (circa 1800) were the two best Madeira I’ve had. Need to include Madeira in one of our dinners ...

We had a 2015 Thivin Cote de Brouilly about 10 days ago. It was really wonderful and at about $25 great Q/P ratio. We drink Beaujolais only a couple times a year but always enjoy the quality stuff in the $18 to $30 price range. On the other hand, I detest Beaujolais Nouveau.

Really too bad about your 2014 VCC - supposed to be outstanding. Plus I’ve got a few bottles and was interested in your opinion on it.

Re: ***BWE ZOOM LINK FOR TASTING ON NOV. 8TH, 6pm Eastern Time

I like the idea of a particular vintage - could do most good years between 1970 and 2001 a lot less stuff after that. I think 1989, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998 or 2000 would all be good choices. Another idea could be a particular appellation, like Pauillac, St. Estephe or Pomerol.

Pinot Grigio from Italy
Sancerre

With a little air, this 1985 Gruaud sure has opened up nicely. Love the aroma and acidity to balance the remaining fruit and funk. Gruaud Larose was so wonderful in 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985 and 1986. Along with Pichon Lalande my favorite wine in that time frame.
