Re: BWE 2022 in DC October 14/15 or 28/29

But what about 1962 - one of my favorite vintages of Bordeaux. Unfortunately, I am all out of 1962 Bordeaux.

Happy to bring some 1982s - it was our wedding year so I did buy a few.

Let’s not get too deep into a theme. My favorite theme is wines that are drinking well now!

Re: The most over classified wine.

I have had many fine bottles of Lascombes from the 1970s and few from more recent vintages that were reasonably good. On the other hand, I think Rauzan-Gassies is the easy winner in this contest - they had way more off years than any other classified Bordeaux between 1960 and 2000. The 1959 is the o...

Re: Margaux appellation pecking order

I drank probably 15 bottles of 1970 Lascombes. The first time I had it (about 1978) it was the best wine I had ever had up until that point. As the decades went by Palmer became my go to Margaux wine with Giscours and Rausan Segla moving up. Chateau Margaux moved to the top with all the fine stuff t...

Re: The Winona Chief arrives in Maine....

Couple more thoughts.

The Angelus was from a 375 so it may be a bit further along its maturity curve than 750s. The Angelus was a fine, rich, outstanding wine not over-the-top, modern spoofy thing.

The peaches and blueberries with whipped cream were fabulous with the Yquem.

Re: Margaux appellation pecking order

But if we are looking at 1966 to 1999:

Margaux (really not so well before 1978)
Palmer
Rausan Segla
Giscours
Brane Cantenac
Cantemerle
Lascombes
Prieure Lichine

Not too good at this since I have not enough red Bordeaux from vintages after 2001 to evaluate and rank the various producers.

All of the wines showed very, very well. It was a great evening. I think I should emphasize that sharing a bottle of outstanding Champagne over 2 and a half hours is the ideal way to get full appreciation of the Champagne. This was a classic Krug Grande Cuvée, a great wine, not just bubbles. The 199...

Re: What are we drinking in the Omicron ominous?

2007 Ridge Geyserville - a pleasant enough wine but not as much kick as I usually get out of Ridge Geyserville. For one thing, only 58% Zinfandel and seemed it was past its best. Nothing really wrong with it but a bit tame. I think I would have been happier with a 2016 Cote du Rhône in the $20-25 pr...

Great notes! I’m a big fan of Trotanoy, glad the 2003 showed so well. My favorite recent vintages: 1995, 1998 and 2000. Also have enjoyed several vintages from the 1970s and 1980s.

Re: Lafite Rothschild - 13 Vintages tonight

David, I only asked for an additional pour of 4 wines: the two 1996 Champagnes (Salon and Taittinger CdC), the 1990 Lafite and the 1988 Yquem. Initial pours were about 2 ounces so about a third of each bottle was left after going around. I didn’t finish many of the wines.

Nothing wrong with the 1988 and 2002 Lafite. Both were very good wines but didn’t seem all that special to me. I really didn’t like 1994 Lafite all that much. We finished the evening with a wonderful bottle of 1988 Yquem. Second great one of those in a row. My Favorite first growths are Haut Brion, ...

Guilty again tonight - 1982 Grand Puy Lacoste with salmon. Probably not the best match, usually go with red Burgundy or Oregon Pinot Noir with salmon but there was half a bottle of the’82 GPL in the frig that needed drinking. The GPL actually showed pretty well, it was still fresh after 3 days using...

Very good (like 92-93 points) showing tonight from 1995 Fortes de Latour. Very old school Paulliac character to this one and pretty much full maturity. Red Burgundy
Champagne
German Riesling

White Burgundy is close in 4th place. Ten years ago Southern Rhône would have been in the top 3 but I have really increased my Champagne consumption and decreased my Chateauneuf consumption over the last decade.

Eric,
With just 11 coming to tonight’s dinner, I think bringing 2 750s is a good idea. With 750s we can just open what we need as things progress. We will probably only need 2 or 3 (at most) bottles of Champagne.
