Re: 1996 Sociando Mallet is a failure

Disappointing showing Ian. My experiences (a few pasted below) have been mixed, but overall seem better than yours, though my note from 2009 sounds pretty darn similar. I still like this wine, but I find it too lean to go wild about. It was in 2018 when I decided that the 1995 is better than the 199...

. . Yea put me in Mark’s camp. At least for my country palate, alcohol never integrates. Ever. I actually think it’s presence becomes more noticeable on wines as the youthful fruit starts to fade and the wine moves into the secondary and tertiary stages. It is a rare wine indeed, IMHO, that can han...

Re: NM on the 2010 Vintage

I have fairly consistently preferred 2009 to 2010 when tasting them next to each other (an interesting exception is Leoville Poyferre). As Neal Mollen hints in this article, the tannins in 2010 tend to be raspy and overbearing, That is hopefully a problem that will fix itself with age, but as Mark ...

The last part was a joke, Jim.

The point was Trump barely won any of those three states, winning in fact by historically minuscule margins in the 3 states which happened to decide the election. So no, Trump didn’t “ kicked her pretty good in that state”.

Re: What are we drinking in lockdown?

For me, glossy is a wine obviously softened through modernist techniques during elevage like Rolland’s signature microoxygenation. Silky is a wine soften by time in the cellar. I don’t object to glossy in principle, I just don’t like the way the wines taste/feel.

Per WineSearcher, most wine we talk about on wine boards is cheaper in Europe, usually a lot cheaper even after VAT taxes. From what I’ve seen, this substantial local “discount” is true in every European country where wine is made.

1990 Langoa Barton: Fully mature, round, soft, very pleasant but for a Third Growth from 1990, a little bland. Kinda an 88-89 point wine, one we happily drink, but not one we really need to seek again.

The 2008 Laurent Perrier I had a few days confirmed for me that this is a top value in vintage bubbly. The 02 of this in February really charmed as well, while the 08 was much more steely and bright at present.
