Re: Special bottle/label for 2015 Château Margaux

Very nice hommage à M. Pontallier. One of my fondest memories, and one of my peak wine experiences, was the BWE visit to Ch. Margaux in 2005 and the dinner conversation sitting next to Paul Pontallier. We talked about everything from corks vs screwcaps to the Iraq war. A well-rounded, truly gentle g...

Re: 95 Montrose, 95 Gazin, and a couple more

I’ve been very happy with my 95s, though not ecstatic/blown away. Except for the first growths. I was extremely happy with them. Not because they tasted that great, but because the prices for them got just plain silly about 7-8 years ago. I ended up drinking a few and auctioning off the majority.

Re: TN: 1989 Vieux Château Certan (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol)

Not a top Pomerol Nic, agreed. I liked it better than Parker, who gave it 87 points and said in 2002: The last two tastings have been better than early tastings, suggesting I underrated the wine. It is still somewhat austere, with a rather evolved dark garnet color already revealing some amber. The ...

TN: 1989 Vieux Château Certan (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol)

Tom (briefly again) in DC stopped by to cheer me up so it only seemed right to pop a cork. 1989 Vieux Château Certan - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol (11/10/2017) The second of three bottles purchased from Benchmark Wine Group in 2014. Fill just into neck, spongy soft cork stained halfway up ...

A lot of truth in there Alex. You have a difficult task in combating a well-entrenched mindset about Bordeaux. While I agree with what you wrote, there are many more people like me who celebrate the great growths than there are like Chris who look to Bordeaux for value wines. I had a mental image of...

Re: The 2015 Domaine Charvin has been uncorked...

Agreed Arv. I usually start drinking my CdPs at about age 8 and find most in my wheelhouse at age 10-20. The ones I like best, like Beaucastel and Vieux Telegraphe, get even better with more age than that. Charvin is a candidate for that group but I don’t have enough experience with old bottles of i...

Re: The 2015 Domaine Charvin has been uncorked....

I haven’t had the 2015, but Charvin is usually considered a relatively traditional producer. IOW not one you’d expect to be over-ripe or over-sweet. That said, young Grenache can come across as too sweet.

Wow, that’s a load of great notes. Agree with you completely on the Deux Albions - a favorite QPR year in and year out. The Chave Mon Coeur is good but a bit too sweet cherry for me. Re: Natural, bio, organic, SO WHAT?

This thread shows how difficult it is to generalize. Some organic wines may be on the high-acid, AFWE end of the balance spectrum, but it’s not a reliable indicator. See Jacques' list above. On the other hand, when it comes to sans soufre or "natural" wines, the risk of an unbalanced wine ...

Great post by Claudius on the foibles of trying to label Bdx as "modern" or "traditional." There are so many factors and meanings, it can vary from year to year for the same property, and it’s so subjective. Yet there is clearly a spectrum as Arv points out. Carlos, good to see y...

Stefan, at least 3 levels. C3-C6 for sure. Possibly down to C7 or T1 depending on how well the bone holds the screws. Posterior approach which is painful longer but should give a more solid fusion and less mucking around the swallowing nerves.

Patrick, do you use CT or some sort of program to track your TNs? I update drinking windows whenever I find a wine drinking substantially younger or older than expected. It’s far from foolproof, but I do look at them before opening a bottle. And it’s more accurate than my memory at this point.
