Re: So what have you bought lately?

Yeah, I’ve had money in various short term (<1 year) Tbills for about a year now and for the next year going forward. Some would probably say I’m too young for low risk investments, but this is easy money.

Re: 2005 Duhart Milon

This is great to hear. The 2005 Duhart was $44 in 750ml and $22.50 in 375ml on release, and I bought a case of 750s and eight 375s. During the Lafitte craze circa 2008/2009, I sold the entire case of the 750s (for $150 each), but I kept all of my half bottles. I wasn't really planning to tuck into m...

Re: The 2005 Vintage -- how good is it really?

Except for 4 bottles of the surprisingly credible Lanessan (which is ready but holding nicely), I have a grand total of 4 bottles of 2003 left, kept purely out of curiosity: Duhart, Pichon Lalande, Sociando, and Langoa Barton.

Re: The 2005 Vintage -- how good is it really?

D'Armailhac is slower to develop than usual, but is pretty close to being there. I will continue to store the few I have left in my warmer storage (64F in the summer). That’s great, as I have a sizable stash of these. I remember trying a bottle in September 2015 when these were still plentiful and ...

Re: 2009 Sociando Mallet Cuvee Jean Gautreaux

I gave it 3 hours in an open decanter and it could probably have used more. The bouquet was the least open part right now but there’s plenty of (ripe, well-judged, not hard/not soft) structure too.

2009 Sociando Mallet Cuvee Jean Gautreaux

I had the 09 Jean Gautreaux last night, really impressive stuff. Maybe more of a claret for a Cali cab lover (but one who likes some restraint and balance) with a more refined, pure, less rustic profile than Sociando usually has, but nothing OTT or overripe. In fact for an 09, it seemed quite restra...

Nice score, Ian. Not the normale, but I did pickup 3 magnums of the 2014 Sociando-Mallet Cuvée Jean Gautreau for $90 each in March (ex-chateau). OrlandoBobby was singing the 2014 normale's praises high and low (when it still was available in stock for only $28), so I figured the Cuvée Jean Gautreau ...

Given what we know so far, I agree Sociando makes the most sense... except I don't recall the BD waxing lyrically about this a recent vintage of Sociando, which should be a tell. Plus, is wine like Sociando likely to go up much in price even if we on BWE go a little nuts buying it up? It always seem...

Not questions for Jim, but background discussion for the rest of us… If we assume for a second it is not St Julien, then it must be Haut Medoc, which probably means La Lagune, Sociando or Cantemerle. If we assume it is St Julien, what could be Jim’s best ever from there? And presumably we’re thinkin...
