Re: The number of châteaux in Bordeaux. Go on, take a guess....
Probably not reckless to say "Bordeaux is diverse," even when referring to the stuff that makes it to the US. But it is true that most of our discussion here is focused on the top 1-2% of those ~9,000 estates. When we say it's overpriced, I think most of us know we're talking about the top...

There are 3 numbers that are too high for me to be even remotely interested in 2015 Bdx:
1) My age
2) My Bordeaux inventory
3) Their prices

NBC reports his passing.
A complicated and controversial man. I found more to admire than dislike, but he certainly provoked strong feelings, both positive and negative over the course of his life.

Re: Sneak preview of the new Cité du Vin in Bordeaux
Nice write up. I've enjoyed reading this and other reports. Sounds like a very nice place but no substitute for the personal sort of attention one can get with an arranged visit at a chateaux. Perhaps more introductory than for the hard core Bordeaux-phile. You mention 14,000 bottles on premises. Ar...

Re: 2005 Barde-Haut has been uncorked and other ramblings….
I like this wine too. My notes from about 6 months ago: 2005 Barde-Haut : Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Dark red/purple, minimal lightening at the rim. Cassis, dark berries on the nose. Medium-full body, dark fruits, nice balance, still some tannins, medium finish. No longer youthfu...

Re: 2009 Lanessan
Danny, I think the '09 is showing the early drinking attributes characteristic of the vintage. You know I like them with age, and this has no signs of mature complexity, but it's not shut down at all. It was probably open about 60-90 minutes before we started drinking it. I see no harm in holding it...

Another candidate for Howing but this wine doesn't need any affirmative action to compensate for its youth. It's drinking quite well already. Dark red to rim, dark fruits, cassis, earth and pencil shavings, open-knit and giving with good structure and soft tannins, medium body, medium finish. Drinki...

Really liking the tobacco and earthy, slightly green-tinged notes coming to the fore with a little more time in the glass.
My first bottle of this last year had an odd buttered popcorn/diacetyl note. No hints of that here.

It's been a year since I bought a few of these and popped my first one, but I think this still qualifies for Howing.
Cork and fill are perfect, deep dark red to the rim.
Need to let this warm up a bit from cellar temp.

Yes I think you are on to something here Marcus. I know I've posted this before, probably a few times. Pavie was the only right banker I bought in 2003. Was this the wine that sparked the RP/JR clash of the critics, or was it an earlier vintage? I've yet to open either of my 2 bottles, but all this positive press is tempting.

I drank through a 6-pack of 2005 Grands Chênes at a young age, over 2009-2014. So I'm not just an old Bordeaux drinker. I may be old, but not all the Bdx I consume is old. This was a good QPR at $22, and was tasty if fairly chunky, as was your 2010. It also carried a noticeable slug of oak. Maybe ap...

I agree with Nic. Flowery, fruity and granitic are great general descriptors. I would add that there are some Bojo producers making a more serious, weighty wines that drink fine young but can also improve with age. Great balance and less sweetness than the ubiquitous Duboeufs. Not as serious as clas...

So the 2009 Haut Bergey is very approachable. Despite my avowed aged Bordeaux allegiance, I found it quite enjoyable when following the Jim How manual on how to enjoy young wines. A prime grilled ribeye no doubt helped. I've got a half-case and wouldn't mind drinking them at this stage of their evol...

My experience with 1989 Lynch Bages has been different. I found it shut down until 2002 or so. These were bottles purchased as futures ($30/bottle, $70/mag) and stored at 55-57 ...
