Re: What are we drinking in lockdown?
The 08 Dom was so coiled up the one time I had it — still delicious (I loved the umami notes I got from it) but like a clenched fist.

Re: So, Lynch Bages a Second Growth, really? (Pick 3)
I would have definitely voted for Ducru but for their lengthy cellar-taint stretch — come on, their 85-90 vintages are basically untouchable, that’s really hard to ignore. And Baron — were there any good wines made at this address between 1970-1988? I’ve had a decent bottle or two of the 86 I suppose.

Re: So, Lynch Bages a Second Growth, really? (Pick 3)
Lynch and PLL were easy to choose with the first two picks. Then it gets more challenging as I am usually let down by LLC, and I don’t love/ or have had bad luck with L. Barton pre-1990. Because of that I voted Montrose for my third.

Re: So, Lynch Bages a Second Growth, really? (Pick 3)
You are such a mischievous naughty boy Nic like Mutley to Dick Dastardly. It has already been decided by BWE that Lynch should be a second. As Racer Chris said in the other poll post this one was easy to call. To which I quipped that even Trump would have conceded this one, which you and the BD see...

Re: The Lynch-Bages thread
Indeed. The bottle of the 86 Lynch (that Jacques brought to Denver in 2018) gave the 82 Gruaud (also Jacques’ bottle) a serious run for its money, which is very high praise indeed. Both wines were truly sensational and while I slightly preferred the Gruaud, others (including Jacques) gave the nod to...

Re: The Lynch-Bages thread
I completely concur with where your evolution ended up, Ian. In my experience, Lynch Bages is undoubtedly a super second and a classic Pauillac to boot. There’s a few caveats in all that though — I’ve had very few vintages post 2000 and I’ve had way less LB in general than many of your here. But I l...

Re: Corkage Dilemma: A Wine-Wine Solution
Corkage in Colorado is a nightmare. Still 100% illegal in theory and largely in practice too. If any venues around here had a decent wine list with even half way decent prices, this could be a tolerable situation but I’ve yet to find that combo.

2014 Ridge Geyserville with delivered pizza. I like the 2014 Geyserville more that the Lytton Springs. It is smooth, full of Zinberries, and has good balance. It will be more complex later, but now it is a pleasure to drink with pizza. Nice. Notes like this do make me wonder though what the ‘ceilin...

Can we just get La Lagune banned once and for all???
Maybe that and the The Winemakers' Collection Michel Rolland Cuvée No. 1 Château d'Arsac.
Not sure which is worse.

The 94 Dominus is one of the few (the only?) cali cabs that I prefer to the 91. (But both the 91 and the 94 Dominus are awesome).

1995 Cabreo Il Borgo Toscana Super spicy, chocolatey nose, like a Mexican hot chocolate (without the cinnamon). A little typical VA, nice acids, mostly resolved finish with some drying wood tannin still lingering. For me, this is a lovely combo of predominantly Sangiovese with Cabernet in a supporti...

Bravo, Howard. Love the 95 GPL, always have preferred it to the 96. I just think the 95 will be even better in another 5+ years (for my palate of course).

Re: Your top underachiever wine
Interesting, Jim. For the money, there are few wines I like better than Lynch Bages from 1978-1990. I have had terrific to scintillating bottles of the 78, 80, 82, 83, 85, 86, 88, 89 and 90 Lynch, all in the last 5 years or so. That 86 Lynch that Jacques brought to Denver in July 2018 was epic, and ...

Re: Your top underachiever wine
I look at this the other way round. With so many spoofalated, it is more a case of what is left... Sadly, this is what I have come to feel as well. So many estates that I once loved have gone rogue, leaving just a dozen or two that I can really trust (and afford). And more fundamentally, I have (of...

Re: 1999 Leoville Barton: extremely disappointing
I get not liking Leoville Barton (and Leoville Las Cases for that matter). They can be tannic, stern, charmless, foursquare, dry, take ages to mature, etc., but modern, spoofed, flabby??? Come on, that’s just silly. I for one have have had terribly experiences with 80’s Barton overall (with a pretty...

Re: 1999 Leoville Barton: extremely disappointing
I’m still thinking about this, and I know Gilman likes a “soil signature” in his wines. That has me wondering, which bordeaux smell and taste the most like “dirt”? Many chateau don’t really have a fresh tilled mollisol profile, they’re more cedary or graphite driven like a classic pauillac. And most...

Re: 1999 Leoville Barton: extremely disappointing
I’m pretty surprised at Gilman’s take on LB. If he were talking about Poyferre, I could understand but Barton?! If Gilman feel this way about Barton, what could he think of Pontet Canet, Pape Clement, St Pierre, Beychevelle, GPL, etc, (all wines which have become more modern that Barton)? Or maybe ...
