Re: 2012 du Tertre

When it comes to this specific wine, I think we are just experiencing it differently. I got some green notes, but they were "fresh-cut brush" to me, and quite pleasant. I tolerate that type of green at higher levels than bell pepper. Though even bell pepper at low enough levels can be a po...

RIP Robert Sinskey, M.D.

Robert Sinskey, M.D. passed away in June this year. I remember Bob as a giving, generous teacher. I had the good fortune and the honor of learning cataract surgery from him during my residency at UCLA/Jules Stein Eye Institute in the early 1980s. The Sinskey lens was one of the first really popular ...

Nice batch of 2000s. Glad to hear that they are ready for action... Sorry about the corked Duhart.

I'm also a fan of the Huet Vouvrays and have to remind myself to restock.

Re: Cellar temperature?

Rob, I agree, no right or wrong here - it's what you like. While I don't think that storage temps into the low 70s will damage wine, especially Cab-based reds like Bordeaux, I do think that those wines will evolve faster than ones stored 10-15 degrees cooler. Danny, I think mid-60s might have some a...

Re: Cellar temperature?

My cellar is at 55-57 degrees. I did a comparison with wines stored in my father's passive cellar with annual swings up to low 70s in summer. Those wines peaked and declined years earlier than the same wines purchased at the same time but stored in my cellar. I think you have a valid point, Rob. But...

Unemployment is low in the US in large part because the participation rate has fallen sharply, even for prime working age males. I'm with the "not over-rated" crowd. Over-priced? Well, yes, compared to what I want to pay. I'd also like to see Ferrari selling the 458 Italia for a price I could afford. But these things are priced based on what the market will bear. And when quality matches the super-seconds, it's not ...

I like some versions of "green" in my wine more than others. At low levels they add complexity, but at some point they poke out and become a negative distraction. I find "grassy" and "leafy" tolerable at higher levels than "bell pepper" or "geranium."...

I drank the 2000 Pontet Canet tonight. Great balance, beginning complexity, nice mix of fruit and greens and forest floor, xcellent wine that's drinking really well now but I'd destined for even better days ahead as it develops more complexity.

I think you've got me in the right spot, Ian, and Danny's additions seem spot on. I will say I like to drink them older than I tend to have them in the cellar. Mostly because I'm too chicken to roll the dice on older bottles at auction, so the oldest stuff I've got is from the early eighties. If I c...

I had a 2003 Branaire Ducru last week and thought it excellent. I agree that the left bank wines are turning out much better than the "hot mess" they were supposed to be. I bought about 2 cases of 2003s and am starting to try them.

Well that makes perfect sense. Young burgs can be satisfying but the aged stuff was one of my favorites. It's still frustrating to think about what I'm missing because I'm unwilling to roll the dice on expensive bottles to age 10-15 years or more.

Fun article. There's plenty of room for BS in wine criticism. It seems natural to me to compare what we taste and smell to things that they remind us of. Most TNs are approximations. From what I've heard (mostly from Don Cornwell on WineBerserkers), the reasons the Feds didn't prosecute Kapon were: 1) The statute of limitations had run on many/most of the Rudy consignments that were auctioned by AMC 2) With a mostly circumstantial case, they needed Rudy to testify against Kapon,...

I would take Professor Stefan's advice to the bank. 1980 and 1984 were never any good so I suppose if you still have any of those, might as well uncork them and pour them out. I'm not in any hurry to finish my 1986s, 1988s or 1989s, and if I had any left I wouldn't be in any hurry to drink the 1990s...

Yes, I agree. Great notes. Fine wine but not great QPR and not destined to turn magically complex.

I keep having to remind myself every time I read one of Jono's posts that his scale goes from 0-100, not 50-100.

I agree, a little green is nice and can add complexity. Like oak in wine or salt/spice in food, if it becomes the center of attention it's a distraction and a detraction. Sociando Mallet, like Loire Cab Franc, can keep it under control in a ripe year. Fresh green peppers out the wazoo sounds like to...
