Re: Mature Bdx @ Lenny’s North 2/27

Thanks for posting your notes. I'm not surprised by the showing of 1985 Beychevelle - many 1985s (La Mission, Lynch Bages and Cos d'Estounel just few examples) are in beautiful place right now. Also not surprised by the corked Ducru, a very high percentage Ducru from the late 80s were corked. Althou...

I think 1983 is a good idea for one of the themes for Thursday night. I'll check around when I get back home. Been busy this weekend drinking nice wines with JohnZ (Gary Rust) and the Minneapolis wine crew. One other thing, Marjorie will not be able to make it to the Thursday night dinner. She will ...

I do remember the 1989 Cos from that long ago 1989 dinner at Fabios. I was surprised by how good it was - I agree it is one of the best 1989s. There are a number of disappointments (Latour and Mouton and Grand Puy Lacoste come to mind) from 1989 and Cos was a bit disappointing early on but I think i...

Premox is still a thing - had a couple bottles of 2012 Criots Batard Montrachet showing early signs of premox in January and February 2017. They were rich and delicious but had clearly peaked. Given their aging trajectory, not for keeping. A good (let alone a Grand Cru) white Burgundy should still b...

I am certainly in for Thursday night. Marjorie is likely to participate as well. As to theme, I'm fine with years ending in 9. I do have some 1979s left and many of the 1999s are in a good place now. Probably better to leave 1989 for Saturday night.

I like Sauternes with blue cheeses. And of course with a pate or foie gras. Savory works best. I have it with lobster and that was fine. Except for Yquem and Climens, most Sauternes are relatively cheap.

1986 Pichon Lalande is amazing. 1996 Yquem is amazing - even in a mediocre year for Sauternes, Yquem will do whatever it takes to make a great wine. I have been to a number of wine dinners in Colorado - always a great time, especially if Tom and Blanquito are involved.

Pretty sure it was the 1999 Guigal Ampuis that was corked - sorry. One other thing, I was at a 1985 Bordeaux dinner in DC just 3 days after this and I thought the 1986s were much better. Besides the big 4 (2009, 2010, 2015, 2016), I think 2014 is probably the best. However, for short term drinking, I'm a big fan of the 2012 vintage - lovely fruit with nice ripeness but not over-the-top and great for drinking young.
