Re: What are we drinking in lockdown?

Good question, Stu. I’m certainly not expert on this topic but I have noticed the high scores William Kelly has given to many Niellon cuvees in recent vintages.

Re: Uncertain Smile: Bordeaux 2019 by Neal Martin

I am 49, and I'm only backfilling red Bordeaux at this stage (but naturally I'll scoop up new release stuff when it's +50% off like those recent 2016 Pichon Baron, Cos and Lynch).

Unless modern vintages end up maturing faster than the old ones did, I like my claret best with 30 years on it.

Re: President Trump

Clearly Biden’s best shot in those states is PA— if these polling averages hold up overall, PA is looking like ground zero for the Biden campaign. Meanwhile, Trump needs to defend his own turf in Texas, Georgia, Iowa, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona. If Trump loses just one of these state...

Re: President Trump

If you sum states up where Biden is currently >+5% based on these polls, he has 259 Electoral College votes. The next 4 states in line (PA, FL, AZ, NC) are worth 75 EC votes, and Biden’s is currently leading in those states by a range of 3.7% to 2.0% points— if Biden wins just one of those four stat...

538 is (finally) turning it’s quantitative attention to the 2020 election. The early summaries are looking very favorable for Biden, even more than I thought. The only “bad” state right now for Biden is PA. Nate Silver: “We'll have our national and state polling averages coming out soon. Note that t...

2005 La Vieille Cure - a wine Jacques would love to hate

2005 La Vieille Cure * After the recent LVC chatter, I decided to take one of these out for a stroll... Still sports a dark magenta hue, and a big, lifted bouquet displaying a bit of heat, sweet cranberries, and loads of char and roasted notes. The nose is really distinctive, it’s filled with both ...

At least though the 2005 vintage (after which I stopped buy the Fontenil), Fontenil always showed more modern and oaky than LVC did for my camel palate (from one ungulate to another). They’re both on the modern end of things, but fontenil became a bridge too far me.

2009 Togni Tanbark Hill Cabernet
Their equivalent of a second label, quite nice for the price with good red cherry fruit buttoned down by some ample acids (by cali standards). But compared to the grand vin this is nothing more than a straight-forward, reasonably balanced quaffer.

And if you are winning, a stable race is a good thing.

This is just one pollster, so it's best used for trends rather than absolute margins (many other pollsters with better track records than YouGov give Biden a much bigger lead currently).

I agree, Comte. My stance all along has been about the basics— no incumbent running for a second term has ever been re-elected with net disapprovals as bad a Trump: LBJ and Ford (sort of, they’re not perfect examples as neither were a traditional incumbent and at the 11th hour LBJ didn’t even run in...

Well, 538 gave Trump a roughly 1 in 3 chance of winning on the eve of the election. Most other pollster had it more like 1 in 10, so I give 538 credit. And they are saying they should have relied more on the polls in 2016, not less, and the polls in 2020 are telling a very strong story for now. If t...
