I have nowhere the needed experience to have any informed opinion on this, but that won't stop me from saying that I think Richebourg is the bee's knees (based on the 3-4 times I've had a wine from there).

1982 Meyney A pristine bottle purchased for a song at a small wine ship in Islington in April 2018... just a flat out gorgeous bouquet of cedar, cigar wrapper, leather, with spicy notes of black pepper and even mint. Silky smooth palate, but showing lean so far. Still, really good but no better than...

Funny thing is that at one time I liked oxidative whites, but no more. We no longer drink Sherry. I opened the other night an Arbois Vin Jaune (Jura wine) that was a gift from a friend from Besancon. Neither Lucie nor I liked it. I'll pour most of the bottle down the drain unless Lucie wants to use...

Other than some of those Basque hard to pronounce whites (Txakolina or something) Spanish still whites are another category I find to be dismal. Nice range of whites there, Arv. For me, I think the white wine world is a target rich environment. I’m bored with most off-dry stuff right now and there’s plenty of stuff in California I find downright awful, but I thoroughly enjoy virtually all whites made in Europe. True that, outright steals were usually because of a mistake by the retailer or liquidation or Ponzi schemes. Yeah, it’s a moving target with inflation and changing personal income. Retrospective valuations provide a healthy context but can be misleading. To wit, as you note 2000 bordeaux futures prices seem pretty darn cheap now for sure, but to me virtually all pre-2005 futures prices seem cheap (and I be...

An interesting sub-question is which is everyone’s favorite vintage of L. Barton? I have had bad, even terrible luck with 80’s Barton, with 3-4 corked bottles of the 82 and some meh bottles of the 86 and 89 which may have subpar storage. The 85 was really good the one time I had it, though. I’d have...

I think by the late 90's by and large, Bordeaux and much of Burgundy were well charted territories, and days of really screaming deals were over. My greatest score was probably the 86 Gruaud Larose for $22 after a mixed case discount. I bought 6 of these in 1995 for that princely sum. Gonon St Joe probably counts for something as I bought them when they were $35, and sold them when they were $150.
