Patrick, do you use CT or some sort of program to track your TNs? I update drinking windows whenever I find a wine drinking substantially younger or older than expected. It’s far from foolproof, but I do look at them before opening a bottle. And it’s more accurate than my memory at this point.

I have a friend in far upstate, so if I actually had to travel to get wine from SWE I think I would arrange a visit to my friend and stop there along the way home. Of course I'd have to get at least 2 cases since its not a trip I would make often. In the true spirit of BWEism, any impediment can be...

I liked the Newton Unfiltered Cabs from the early 90s. 1991, 1992 and 1994 were a high water mark for modern California in my book.

Agree, it sucks when wines don't live up to expectations. But not too many German Rieslings will stand up to the memory of a well-aged 2001 JJ Prum.

St Julien: Gloria
Pauillac: Haut Bages Liberal
St Estephe: Lafon Rochet
St Emilion: Barde Haut
Pomerol: Rouget (the 1982 was my first ever Pomerol. Ups & downs since but I like its QPR)

I think he came in around 1995. The 1995 Poyferre was a pretty unfriendly wine a decade or more ago. BA used to have in business class and it was a curmudgeonly beast. Someone sold me a couple of mags of 1994 for a song...I can see why he wanted to get rid of them...the wine was emaciated. So there...

Re: TN: 2012 Leoville Poyferre

Most of those descriptors sound about right for a shut down 5 yo Bordeaux, though heavy extraction is worrisome. I'll quote Blanquito and say it needs 5 years. Maybe 10. Then again, if it's not giving you any hope for the future, no point in keeping it.

Same take here. Not sure it would be possible to do a truly valid classification. How do you define quality? So default to price. And then what time frame would you look around? The classification is less relevant in today"s information-rich environment, where ratings can be disseminated within...

Still young but giving a lot of pleasure. Excellent. Some modern and some traditional characteristics. Not weak or thin. Gl...

Nice summary Mark. I think you've nailed the two-phased effect Parker had on winemaking. I'm not sure it's possible to point to a specific year where the switch went on and everyone suddenly began making better wine in cleaner facilities. More like a phase-in over the late eighties to early nineties...

Cold and often sounds good to me too. And with a day or three in the fridge after opening if they can avoid our gullets for that long.

As to age, I like them young, love them middle-aged (as they turn gold and early copper), but don't like them old (fully copper to brown or dark caramel/chocolate).
