Well if he’s 21 it’s not too soon to introduce him to some great Bordeaux and some pretty great Bordeaux lovers. :D

Seriously though, enjoy the time with your son. The time passes way too fast. Maybe next time.

Re: ***DC '18: March 22-25***

Very generous offer Stuart. I'm working with Charlie Palmer and seeing if some locals are interested. I think I'll be able to get the cost down to $250/person. The BD decreed that CP is our venue, primarily because the room is great for our group and the staff is amenable, so that is where I went. A...

Re: ***DC '18: March 22-25***

The other big cost difference compared to past years, besides the higher minimum for the room, is the high-end Champagne. That adds about $50 per person at our current numbers. In past years we did BYO or I bought inexpensive Champagne. I explained that up front and asked for input from the group be...

$3500 is not huge if you have 30-40 people, which is our usual turnout. You are welcome to make alternative arrangements Marc. I will be happy to turn it over to you entirely.

Marc, I used a little moderator magic to update the list in your first post.

I agree with limiting it to 20. What usually works is to keep the list going and start a wait list if it gets above 20.

You can ask for checks to lock down spots but in my experience we have very few last-minute dropouts.

I would not be at all disappointed in shifting to younger OR or CA Pinot over time. I've liked StInnocent and Patricia Green. And Ojai Vyd for a less expensive option. Those are wines I wouldnt have to cellar long.

AS a Jets fan, it's impossible for me to root for the Patriots. However, if they win, there is a silver lining: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/25/what-the-tom-brady-indicator-means-for-the-stock-market-rally.html Hopefully, like the onetime "NFC win in the Superbowl=stock rally indicator", ...

Re: What are you planning on uncorking for the Super Bowl?

CV, winning never gets old if it’s your team. Stefan, I tired of the keep two/sell one runaround required to assuage the guilt of opening a Screagle, so I dropped off the list. That and SQN were my last two holdouts, and they both went down last year. But I still have a few bottles. Ed, I’m with you...

Those numbers sound about right to me Jim. We’ll see what our consumption does over the next year or two. It’s less than a few years ago. I can always start buying again as the cellar dwindles or if our consumption increases. Backfilling on years like 2014 shouldn’t be too expensive, especially if d...

I plan to skip 2015 and purchase only three mixed cases of 2016's. While I haven't tasted any 2015's, my reading has left me with the opinion that I own enough of this vintage style in the '05's and '10's that I own. Of course, my fondness for Domaine de Chevalier will most likely get me to buy 6 o...

Probably won’t be drinking during the game. But I’m rooting for the Eagles and if they win, a Screaming Eagle will be drunk to celebrate. If they lose, we’ll drink it in honor of their effort. I’m not really a NE hater, though I sometimes play one on the web just to irritate certain NE fans. I just ...

Alex, our cellars are (were) more similar than you think. I purchased most of my wines in lots of 2-6 bottles. And for the same reason you cite: variety. I currently have a total of only 1 full case. The Chinato that Tom poured in DC a few years ago caught me off guard, though it didn’t surprise me as much as the cops that showed up shortly after. Interesting that neither MacArthur nor Calvert Woodley in DC are offering 2015 Léoville Barton. MacArthur isn’t showing any 2015 Bordeaux at all on their website. Reactions I’ve seen from "non-wine people" to California/Bordeaux comparisons have been more mixed. When California is preferred it’s for its up front fruit over the earthiness and complexity of the Bordeaux. Usually not blind so there could be some inherent label or country bias.
