Re: Poll: Was Robert Parker a net positive or a net negative for Bordeaux?

Net positive and not close for me, though there were definitely negative aspects to his influence. Parker did impact winemaking. For the better early on, and then negatively from the mid-'90s forward. Fortunately, the good changes (cleaner cellars, less rot, less Brett, etc.) are sticking while the ...

Welcome eel! Looking forward to hearing more from you.

Prieure Lichine 1983 was one of my first case purchases - my father and I took a drive to Scarsdale and we went in on 3 cases together.

It's our 36th anniversary. Planning on an '88 Mouton and '88 Yquem but Peggy's been taking Tylenol and Advil for a sciatica flare so we'll postpone.

Re: 2005 Bordeaux revisited.

GBF, I hope you are correct about 2005 Angelus. That’s one I’m holding but have yet to try. I should crack one. CT notes suggest to me it’s very “modern.” I’m not seeing a lot of suggestions about over-extraction. Though the most recent says it’s shut down and very oaky. What do you mean by “a lamb ...

Re: 2005 Bordeaux revisited.

GBF, I’m not sure what your point is about Parker and the WA. He was still writing the WA Bordeaux reviews when 2005s were bottled. That was at a point when a lot of folks were saying his palate had turned. Nevertheless, I bought a number of 2005s that he extolled in prose and rated highly (97-100 p...

Re: 2005 Bordeaux revisited.

I went long (for me) on 2005s and have about half of them left. It was the last year I bought based heavily on Parker reviews. I was a slow learner. Early hype gave way to concerns for excessive extraction. I drank a lot of the lesser ones and a few of the bigger names at 10-15 years. The overextrac...

Bummer, Danny. Hope that’s the only trigger. Or alternatively if it’s frequent enough something can be done.

Spitting helps for larger events. Less useful for a single bottle at home but if Danielle is drinking and the bottle can be stretched 3 days?

I think it’s been a while since NV Pol Roger has been $25. Not counting crazy NH discounts, that is. We served it at our wedding 36 years ago and IIRC it was in the upper $20s back then. Then again, $25 in 1988 would be $64 today.

I would add 1986 Talbot (I bought a couple for $150 recently), as well as all the usual suspects from 1988, including PLL and Las Cases. No one cares about 1988 anymore, and its great value along with 1983. SF Ed Very wise words. This is exactly where I’d be setting my sights. Well-stored bottles o...

Valid point Ian. But once you get past 20 years or so, the risk of bottle variation increases, and I’m not sure that can be fairly attributed to the estate.

Nice report on some terrific wines.

The one ive actually had is the 1988 Salon. We drank a lot of that for anniversary celebrations over the years. Probably 5+ years since we finished our stash. Salon is one of my favorite Champagnes, but I haven’t bought any since the 2006. Just too expensive.

Regarding BAMA, I had a 2000 about a week ago. Just like the 2010 RG described.

Looks like 2022 Bordeaux rouge is tops in their estimation. I'm too old for them but it will be interesting to see the in-the-bottle impressions.

Does Hachette taste blind? Are there particular critics for each region or do they use a committee rating system?
