Just my opinion but I think Don Perignon is at its best at age 18 to 25+ - I thought the 2002 Dom was too young. Give it another 5 years.

Re: BWE 18 Friday night.

My what an amazing evening. Great to have the 1988, 1989 and 1990 Beaucastel together - all good but the 1989 was my favorite of the the three. 1995 Krug really rocks. Loved all those great German wines. Also so good that the 1959 and 1924 were both in fine shape - always a treat to sample older win...

Re: What is your favourite vintage of Ch. Ducru Beaucaillou?

Had great success with a 375 of 1966 Ducru B just two years ago (Jan 2016) - was quite a surprise considering its age. When I first got into wine (late 70s), I liked the 1970 and 1971. Actually enjoyed the 1973 as well. More recently the 1995 and 1996 have been favorites. Hard to say which one is my...

Today, rain changing to snow this afternoon, then snow, snow and more snow - biggest snowstorm in two years. Weather is supposed to be fine Thursday, Friday, Saturday with highs in the mid-40s. Then chance of light rain/snow Sunday morning.

I think of having two bottles each of two of the best 1998 Bordeaux sounds like a great idea. That way everyone will have a chance to sample them - and no one will be shut out of the chance to have a taste.

I will bring a bottle to add to marcs' Leoville Poyferre vertical - the 1990.

For Saturday: probably 1998 Haut Brion and 1998 Lafleur-Petrus, plus another older red Bordeaux and a Sauternes (have to look around to see what works). Just started thinking about Friday night. I will bring a red Burgundy, white Burgundy and an older Chateauneuf. I'm lazy, I haven't figured it out ...

Re: What’s your favorite vintage of la Lagune?

Haven't had all that many vintages of La Lagune but I have had their 1982 many times and I like it a lot. So I guess that's my winner by default. The bottle of 1982 I opened earlier this month in Minneapolis with Gary Rust was fully mature, maybe a little past peak but still showing very well. I do ...

Many of the red wines from France have been approachable relatively young so I'm not surprised that this one was drinking well. The Papet tends to have great fruit.

I don't know about that, the Trump wines I've tried were pretty bad but the 1990 Grand Puy Lacoste that johnz (Gary Rust) opened up last night here in Minneapolis was outstanding - 95 points easy.

2012 and 2014 are both good vintages for red Bordeaux - good choices for short and moderate term aging. The 2012s have been very good for early drinking, and I think the 2014s will age well.

By the way, Bistro Cacao is basically a couple doors down from Schneider's of Capitol Hill. Another landmark DC wine store. Incredible selection of back vintages, though much of their stock is at an offsite warehouse so need to order a day in advance for a lot of stuff.

Sounds like a great time. That 375 of 1989 Lynch Jim opened last August with Marjorie and me was perfection. Perhaps a little further along the evolution curve than 750s. Not at the 2005 BWE-France but I still have great memories of 1988 Krug.

Like in lots of otherwise so/so vintages, Yquem shines once again in 2003. Just like 1995, 1996, 1999, etc. They take the trouble to make sure their wine is great in every year they make it.
