Re: Completely nutso auction price

I just responded to your post on Wineberserkers on this, so I'll replicate here. In general that Sotheby's auction was pretty nuts, made HDH look cheap. What was especially striking to me was how often prices were far in excess of retail on widely available, not-rare, easy to find Bordeaux. E.g. 20...

Yeah, 98 LB doesn’t usually bring the fireworks, but a bottle of the 98 Pichon Baron was pretty brilliant recently and more or less fully ready to drink.

You look great, Jim! I love the mountain man meets the city look. This summer in lockdown I was walking 10+ miles a day, and my wife was regularly more than that. But the cold weather has put the kibosh on that.

2005 Boyd Cantenac (Margaux) I bought this as futures way back in 2006/7, but this is my first try from the case... A delightful wine squarely between austere-traditional vs modern-glossy, this is a nicely balanced. Shows good fruit, but the sweetness is well harmonized by acids and tannins. I’d cal...

Since Stefan hasn’t, I am officially stepping up here to offer to take all of BWE’s stocks of that swill La Lagune off of your hands, as a public service. So it can be safely and properly disposed of. Heck, I’ll even pay you what it cost on release, I’m just that kinda guy.

I’m long on the record that I don’t really like Leoville Las Cases and/or it’s never ready. More recent vintages might have broken this streak — I actually liked the 02 when I tried it — but even at best it seems overpriced/overrated. For ages, this also summed up my general feeling about red Burgun...

Nice write up, Ian. I’ve had two underwhelming bottles of the 85 Mouton over the last 5 years, but it sure sounds like those weren’t correct bottles. Not had any of the others, but I guess I’m surprised that Lafite was “last”!

Last night with rack of lamb and brussels sprouts, we opened a 2000 Talbot St. Julien. This was the 3rd bottle out of a case that was cracked last May, and all of them have been excellent. I haven’t had many 2018 white burgundy is yet, mostly lower end bottlings from PYCM, Neillon and Billaud Simon. At least compared to the 2017 versions, these are too soft and diffuse at these domaines. They’re not bad, but they lack the electricity that the 2017s show. But it’s good to hear that the...

I’ve won 9 bottles of l’Evangile this month (6 of the 95, 3 of the 90) for well below retail. Not cheap of course, but relative bargains. And I consider well-stored bottles of the 85 La Lagune for $87 all-in a screaming deal.

My sampling of the 85s has been relatively narrow, but boy do I love them. e.g. the 85 and the 86 Beychevelle are great... but I prefer the 85. Only the 85 Mouton has been disappointing.
