I would look at the CellarPro line of cooling units. I don't have one but after researching them this is what I'll buy when my Breezaire dies. The website contains quite a bit of information to help you choose a system to fit your requirements.

Re: What is your favourite super second?

Ian, I still believe that it IS unreasonable to make inferences from CT average scores. I do believe that one can make reasonable inferences from market prices, but any correlation between rank order of prices and CT scores still lacks any significance for all the reasons listed above. Add to that t...

Re: What is your favourite super second?

Ian, common sense told us that the world is flat and the Sun goes around the Earth. Those who insist that this remains the case despite scientific evidence to the contrary are the ones who are not seeing clearly. Perhaps their view is obstructed because their heads are rammed up their asses, but in ...

I don't have it in for you Ian but I do have it in for misuse of statistics, and I wonder what your statistical whiz would say about the power of large numbers when no one is using the same scale. I don't think you can count on them differentiating tiny differences of a point or two when there are m...

Re: What is your favourite super second?

Ian, it came out sounding a lot harsher than intended, and for that I apologize, but at its core it's true. Mis-application of statistics is a bit of a pet peeve for me, so here I go: First point: Large sample sizes are meaningless when there is no standardization of the scale. This is a common erro...

Re: What is your favourite super second?

That CT analysis is meaningless. It presupposes: 1) That there is any statistical validity to comparing CT average scores. There isn't. 2) That if there were any validity to the CT scores, they would apply to an individual's ranking. They wouldn't. I find it much more interesting to hear individuals...

Dear Fellow BWEs: I am reading this thread with a mixture of excitement, jealousy and regret. Those who are going are in for a real treat. The BWE Bordeaux trip in 2005 was one of the most memorable of my life. Not just because of what we did, but more importantly who we were with and the memories w...

Re: Can a simple 2010 Left Bank, save the weekend?

You have better luck than I do, Nic, but probably because I often forget or am too lazy to put the wine in the fridge. I think that's even more important than replacing the cork. There's more than enough air in the bottle after 1/2 has been poured out to allow oxidation to proceed even if the cork i...

Re: Can a simple 2010 Left Bank, save the weekend?

I consider the ability of a wine to drink well for 1-2 days after opening as suggestive that it will last, but I wouldn't expect any red Bdx to hold up for 5 days after opening.

Glad to hear your bottle turned out well, Nic. Roel, you are a lucky man. After 3-4 years of swearing I would not buy a single bottle of 2010 Bdx, BWE wore me down. I now have about a case and a half resting in the cellar. Lesser wines for early drinking, and every one I've opened so far has been ex...

Rudi - if you still have some, see if the 2005 Grand Chenes tastes any less oaky and modern than it did on release. I've never had the Cuvee Prestige.

And if you see it, try the Rochemorin - that one is less modern than the Grands Chenes to my palate anyway.

So I went and picked up some 2009 and 2010 Rochemorin, and compared them side by side with the following results. RG, you need to do the same so we can compare notes. 2009 Château de Rochemorin - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (1/5/2015) Opened to compare to the 2010. Pop and pour same day...

Re: TN: first Bdx of the year - 2005 Les Grands Chênes, 2010 Rochemorin

Alex, both of these would be good cellar-stockers and should have at least a 10-year life expectancy from the date of the vintage. In fact, the Grands Chênes needed years to absorb its oak, but the Rochemorin was fine right out of the gates. I have no idea if they will develop true Bordeaux complexi...

TN: first Bdx of the year - 2005 Les Grands Chênes, 2010 Rochemorin

Starting 2015 off right with a couple of inexpensive Bordeaux. A portion of the Grands Chênes was used to marinade a butterflied leg of lamb, then forgotten and left on the counter until the next day, when it was rediscovered and drunk with the lamb. It held up well after a day at room temp. It live...

How much Bordeaux did you drink in 2014?

A little fiddling in CellarTracker allows a recap of what was drunk in the past year. For me, Bordeaux and Rhone were tied for first place: Bordeaux 20% Rhone 20% California 14% Champagne 12% Germany 8% Burgundy 7% Spain 3% South Africa 2% Italy/Portugal/Hungary/Australia each 1% What were your top ...

I finally gave in on some 2010 Bordeaux, and bought a few of each of the following: Barde Haut Gloria Grand Puy Lacoste Haut Bages Liberal Haut Bergey La Lagune Rochemorin All due to BWE enablement, further facilitated by some decent NY Day pricing. Other than the GPL, these should all be drinkable ...

Re: Dinner at Schwa Chicago: Dom Oeno, Prum, Casalferro, RWT

No personal experience with Las Vegas BYO. A lot of the top names don't allow it or have very high fees, probably because they have pretty high markups on their wine lists and can sell a lot of those pricey bottles. There was a Thai place, not on the strip, that was very reasonable but I don't recal...

I haven't had it, but the 2010 Cantemerle is sounding like a good candidate: lots of positive impressions from BWEs, a recent vintage, a BWE kind of wine in style and cost and availability. What's not to like?

What was your wine of the year? Tough call, no doubt one of the wines being poured at BWE '14 but I didn't keep track of them all. I find a lot of complexity in the 1989 Angelus. Ive had it many times but never alongside a Figeac. The two are very different styles and different palates will have different preferences, but I wouldn't call the '89 Angelus simple or lacking complexity.
