Valid point Ian. But once you get past 20 years or so, the risk of bottle variation increases, and I’m not sure that can be fairly attributed to the estate.
The one ive actually had is the 1988 Salon. We drank a lot of that for anniversary celebrations over the years. Probably 5+ years since we finished our stash. Salon is one of my favorite Champagnes, but I haven’t bought any since the 2006. Just too expensive.
While waiting for my doctor to finish a colonoscopy before doing my endoscopy (I hope he washed his hands in between) I discovered that I had won a few lots at an auction: 6 2017 Vaudesir, L. Michel $381.30 6 1998 Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir Laurene $227.55 6 2014 Chateau Haut Bailly $409.59 3 2009 ...
Fortunately, the glitch kept me out long enough for the good deals on stuff I’m interested in to be picked over. Tempted by 2016 Cantemerle at $40 but I’m well set on that and Saratoga has it for even less.
It's been awhile since I've ordered from Zachys, I always got good service from them. There seems to be a glitch in the website right now. Just click on any Zachys website link from any of their emails and you sidestep that dump birthdate check which does not permit you to enter their site and shop...
I think you nailed the chatacter of the 2014 vintage: solid, classic, not flashy. I haven't had the Duhart but can second your endorsement of the Leoville Barton.
Regarding those 2016 Haut Brion - my favorite First Growth from a killer year and at INSANE “last chance” NH closeout pricing… I posted this in the Mr. Lafite thread, but it really belongs here. What can you say about a guy that goes 200 miles out of his way on his trip home from work to pick up a f...
So, what can you say about a guy that goes 200 miles out of his way on his trip home from work to pick up a few bottles of fine Bordeaux for a buddy he sees maybe every year or two? Just because the buddy posted on BWE that he’d buy those bottles of 2016 Haut Brion (at INSANE pricing) if he could fi...
I'm set on '19 Montrose. It was ~$125 from Macarthurs as a future.
If I could figure out where the '16 Haut Brion is, and if they'd hold them for pickup in the summer, I might pull the trigger. I'll call them Monday. Do they usually know what's in stock in which stote if you call?
Kind of a wonky website trying to figure out which store has what in stock, and the filters dont always work consistently, but this is the website for the NH state liquor stores: https://www.liquorandwineoutlets.com/ A number of 2016 Bordeaux are listed at 20% off or more (2016 Haut Brion marked dow...
Still reliving the ‘80s glory days:
1989 Haut Brion
1988 Krug
1988 Yquem
1989 Montrose
1989 Lynch Bages
1985 La Mission Haut Brion
1990 Leoville Las Cases
1982 Haut Brion
1982 Gruaud Larose
1986 Talbot
Nice report marcs. I bought a buch of 2105 Cantemerle and have been popping them right and left. No complexity yet but I agree the nose is great and the palate is solid.
Awesome report Joel. Thanks for taking the time. A nice holiday present for the group. My top 5: 85 La Miss 82 Gruaud 86 Talbot 98 Angelus 90 Baron The 89 Lynch was my biggest disappointment. It wasn't corked or flawed in any detectable way, but it wasn’t anywhere near expectations. I left it in an ...
Welcome back JD! Long time... I've only tried one 2019 so far, but I bought a fair number so I'll be watching with interest. I ended up with almost no 2019 St. Emilions. They pegged my over-ripe meter harder than any other commune back in the day, and I've been wary ever since. So of course the one ...
Nice line-up and report! Despite TominDC's best efforts, it took me a loooong time to warm up to Italian wines. Still not a big Sangiovese fan unless it's blended with Cab. And I do like Nebbiolo.
