Re: Premier Cru - you be the judge!

I can understand that a lot of customers who are still waiting for their wines have become more and more anxious with the passage of time. In the past year we've seen Lehman Bros., Bear Stearns, Fanny, Freddie and others go down the drain. My own employer of 22 years, Citi, was within minutes of bit...

Re: TN: 2006 Château Haut-Bailly (France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan)

Make it 20, David. Jim, don't hold your breath waiting for a 2006 Haut Bailly, "Epiphany." The wine takes forever to drink well because the vines are ancient and they always employed no filtration in the winemaking process. I doubt that they care about offering popular, modern or pleasing ...

Re: 1989 Bordeaux tasting - October 17

I am now woefully short of ' 89s because they've been so enjoyable to drink.
That said, if there's room for me, and if you folks could tolerate a second bottle of Ch. Palmer that night, I'd like to join you on Oct. 17th. If it's already a full house, just toss me onto the wait list.

Re: Pichon Lalande shines at Chicago dinner

In 1999 we were thrilled to attend an intimate lunch for six at Ch. Pichon Lalande. Madame May Elaine de Lencquesaing is an elegant and charming host who enjoys speaking about wine. At what I thought was the right moment, I discreetly asked her about the weak 1990 PLL. Madame May replied matter of f...

Those first four undelivered listings are freakin' huge, and of course many more bottles would remain unposted on cellar tracker by people like me, who wouldn't think about posting late delivery of ' 06 futures. As I said before, it's customary for P.C. to deliver very, very late, but they have alwa...

This BWE legend seems to get better and better. I think it'll be a mighty long time before this one starts to lose steam. I've already plundered my last few bottles. Replacements would be tough to find and mighty expensive today. I remember hesitating to continue bidding at Morrell's online auction ...

I agree. This wine was a real stunner at the ' 86 dinner.

That night we laid to rest many published proclamations of, 'death by tannins,' that had previously been associated with 1986 Bordeaux.

Yes, the recent price declines in Bordeaux are a welcome relief. My big stash is the 2000 vintage, with 30+ cases. My dozen or so 2001 bottles are mostly 1st Growths, so I haven't approached them. Here and there I'm generally disappointed with ' 01 Lynch Bages, Leo. Barton and a small handful of oth...

Alex, Your points are well stated. But, for those of us who aren't lucky enough to live in Bordeaux, speak the language and rub shoulders with the chateaux owners, we just don't have time to play the field. A little midweek celebration, so I uncorked and decanted this for an hour. ' 95 Haut Brion first offers medium garnet color with a subtle spiced nose. Mystery of Broadbent's Stolen Bicycle Solved?

Michael Broadbent's iconic fifty year old bicycle, the one that he's ridden to Christies daily for decades, has been stolen. This artifact, together with a tacky red, "Decanter" cycle helmet was taken from inside his garage. The wine critic and fabled author describes, "a very old Dut...
