Re: 1988 Clinet

I had a few bottles of the '88 Clinet in honor of my daughter's birth year. Unfortunately, I don't think I have any left.
I thought it was a lovely wine. I think I rated them about a 92.

As for the ratings, you have to watch for whose ratings they are. For example, when it's Jonathan Newman, I just ignore the rating.

What is the story with alcohol levels? Have they all skyrocketed?
I recently opened a bottle of 1982 Gand-Puy-Lacoste, which seemed very elegant and balanced.
We checked the label, which said the alcohol was 12%. 'Nuff said.

I've been holding on to 2 bottles of the 1986 Pichon Lalande because it's both one of my favorite chateaux and I married my wife in '86. I've been trying to figure out if they're ready to go, because the last time I had the '86 PL (admittedly some years back), it had clearly not yet hit its prime.

Re: What are your thoughts on 2013 wine of the year ?

As I am first and foremost a Bordeaux lover, it's surprising to me that my wine of the year was probably the 1997 Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet.
If I must choose only among Bordeaux, it would be the 1985 Cos d'Estournel or the 1988 Lynch Bages.

Yquem and seared fresh foie gras, for sure. It's one of those combinations that makes you simultaneously feel thrilled and guilty.

1976 Chateau Latour, at Le Pre Catalan in Paris, in 1982. I knew nothing about wine. I took a stab at this one, which - I learned after my epiphany - was horribly mismarked in price (in my favor).

I think that the Montelena Estate Cab takes quite a while to reach its peak. I own every vintage from 1990 forward, but haven't drunk any post-1999 yet.
I agree that most of the vintages from the '90s are great. (The exceptions being '93 and '98, which are merely very good.)

As it happens, I just had the 1992 Montelena Estate Cab this week. It was excellent. It still looks very young, and tastes young and pretty primary (although not tannic) at first. But after 15 minutes of air, it developed some nice secondary flavors and a more velvety mouthfeel. It is not as earthy ...

Re: Let's face it, Brunello basically sucks.

I enjoy Brunellos a lot, even though there's no question that Bordeaux is my first love in wine. I tend to have them with Italian food, where the acidity of the tomatoes (as in Osso Buco or various pasta sauces) are a good platform for the more acidic Brunellos to shine.
