Re: Thanksgiving 2019
Patrick, looks like they have quite a champagne selection at K&L, assuming I were able to figure out shipping, do you have any other recommendations from their inventory? I’ve bought a ton of champagne from K&L in the last couple of years. Their selection of direct import, grower champagne ...

Re: Thanksgiving 2019
Filhot CdT 1990 is a true BWE insider wine. I’ve never heard it plugged anywhere else and it’s an epic. I’ve picked it up at auction multiple time on the cheap (eg < $55 all in). I think half of the time it’s so inexpensive because no one realizes it’s the CdT (other than those of us BWEers using th...

Re: Thanksgiving 2019
If you guys are buying grower bubbles from K&L, don’t miss the 2012 Franck Bonville BdB for $40 (I got it for $34 after using auction credits). Best value in vintage champagne, perhaps ever.

Re: Another year ending, time to pick a BWE Wine of the Year.
Tiny bit of counterpoint: I thought the 2016 Lagune showed very awkwardly at the UGC event in January. I tried it a couple of times, and it was a head scratcher. Hardly a definitive take (bad bottle?), but I was nonplussed. I should retry. For me, the QPR of the tasting was the Langoa Barton, which ...

Re: Can you fully taste a wine if you spit it out?
It pains me to see at tastings people pour a great wine and dump half of the glass into a bucket. I spit rather than dump. Big amen on that! We spit in my local tasting group all the time. It's only hard because the level of the wines is so high in that group -- for whatever psychosomatic reasons,I...

Re: Thanksgiving wines
I brought usual suspects like 2006 Duhart Milon en magnum, 1978 Lynch Bages, 2003 Sociando Mallet, and 2006 d’Angerville Volnay Chapmans. The Burgundy was nice, the three Bordeaux were a bit grouchy as well. I still think about the d’Angerville Volnay you brought to a small offline in NYC with Ian,...

Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?
The initial discussion of 2016 Bordeaux reminds me of the highly touted 1997 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. I tried a bunch early on and thought they all tasted basically the same. If that's the case, then let's all load up on Lanessan and forget the others LOL. I concur. The 97 Napa cabs were wildly ove...

Re: Is 2016 TOO perfect?
Jim, I share your concern. The 2016 lack soul, personality for my mileage. Here are my notes from the UGC (emphasis added), where I tasted 40+ wines. Out impressions are similar: The 2016 vintage is very pretty to be sure, with a modern display of pure, clean fruit but with plenty of freshness and a...

One thing that we can (probably) all agree on — even though (or if) there are still lovely bottles of 1970 Bordeaux out there, they’ve been ready to go for a long while now. The good ones are merely holding on and have (successfully) done so for years.

1989 Olivier: the glories of yesteryear
Kudos to Orlando Bobby for calling this out one. I grabbed some cheap at auction, fills into the neck, and I’m glad I did. Terrific bouquet of Gravesy smoke and cinder, with complementary notes of leather and earthy forest floor. Fully resolved with a layered mouthfeel and plenty of verve. Love the ...

I just copy Jacques’ white burg reccos these days, budget allowing. As such, I have some 17 Niellon CM and Bouchard Meursault coming. There’s one exception: as stated before, I really like PYCM’s wines and the 2017 PYCM Pernand Vergelesses Combottes secured on sale for a bit <$40 is a wonderful QPR.

Re: Close encounters of the Mouton kind
This calls for a 1970 tasting!
I’ve had maybe 20 wonderful wines from 1970 in the last 5-8 years. Many of the best have been Right Bankers (Magdelaine, Figeac, Canon, Conseillante, Trotanoy) but I’ve had some delightful left bankers too.
I’ve had far fewer 66s but I’ve enjoyed those a lot as well.

Re: Close encounters of the Mouton kind
Amazing. Sounds like Mouton should be elevated to a First Growth! Total aside, but I am increasingly of the opinion that 1970 is a badly underrated vintage, by Parker and seemingly every other critic too. Unfortunately they probably need to be enjoyed soon and the auction market can be a minefield w...
