Re: TN: Chris B in town and a few 2005s from half bottles.
Chris came to Denver in 12/18, and amongst many other marvelous bottles (including the 86 Talbot, 86 Cos and 86 Rausan Selga), he popped a hauntingly good 86 Pichon Lalande in peak form which in the end left the other wines humbled. The 86 PLL is correctly ‘valued’ by the market but I had to have so...

TN: Chris B in town and a few 2005s from half bottles.
Winona Chief was in town a fortnight ago or so, so four of us (including Ricky and Steve) went to our old haunt and had some lovely wines. We had a 100% pinot noir champagne of Chris' that was really good, and an excellent 2010 Billaud Simon chablis. Then we had some epic reds: 1990 Figeac This is a...

Re: FRANCE 2020
I really want go, and I can pretty much make 9.5 months a year work, but my job doesn’t have normal vacation options. When teaching a full load, there’s no relief — but the rest of the time I have full flexibility to work from home, the road, at night. Conventions are different as only a long weeken...

Just had the 90 Figeac recently, a bottle that Chris B brought to a wine dinner, and yes, the earth moved. Pricey wine but OMG stuff.

I 96 Lafon Rochet [St Estephe] ... For my tastes, these should be drunk now. I probably missed the apogee for these, which I would have estimated to have been at age 15. +1, big time I drank through around a case of these, and for my mileage they peaked at precisely 15 years of age. Here’s my CT hi...

I like a 96 revisit!
Also, 1970 and 1990 would be good themes too.

I've really enjoyed the 1979 du Tertre over the years, various notes highlighted it as an under the radar gem.

1 bottle 1985 Talbot $67 all-in at auction
13 bottles 2009 Ridge Geyserville $33 all-in at auction
I was winning a 3 bottle lot of the 1995 Sociando Mallet, but someone named “alfalf” outbid me. Sound like anyone we know?

Re: Tasting from unfashionable vintages from the 1990s
I used to post on the 92 Talbot a lot once upon a time, as we went through cases of the stuff back in the day after my dad secured a bunch on close out in 1995 for $8 each. This wine was shockingly good at around age 10-12 — complex, ethereal — but fell apart by age 15-16. Sounds like your lot was h...

Thanks for the look-see.
Yeah, most classified Medoc still need time in my experience. The 1995 Sociando is drinking quite well these days as are some petit Chateau and cru bourgeois. Can’t imagine when the Firsts will be ready.

Any updates on Brexit now that BJ is running the show? Only 2.5 months to the deadline, is a hard Brexit inevitable at this point, or will they just give another extension?

I don’t think I am sulphur sensitive as I hear that about PYCM’s wines, but it’s not bothered me. One PYCM I thoroughly enjoyed is the Rully Les Cailloux for <$40. Another is their St Aubin Le Banc for <$50. But Neillon’s Chassagne is a big step up and still a good deal at $80 or so. Love the Vergers.

Re: 2008 Haut Bailly
Thawing a bottle can take time, but believe it or not, I use a big bowl full of hot water to speed the melting up (it then takes maybe 15 mins) and I’ve not noticed any ill effects (I often then need to cool the wine back down to the appropriate temperature with a chiller sleeve, even the reds). I’v...

Re: 2008 Haut Bailly
Yes, this was much better in round 2, so a single blanquito is in order. Technical note: when I say “second day” or “day 2”, I almost always mean I froze the remainders (sometimes for months) before thawing it and enjoying it on “day 2”. This always works much, much better than just putting the cork...

2008 Haut Bailly
2008 Haut Bailly Didn’t show much until day 2, but then... Plummy nose with some earthy undertones and a minty topnote. Very nicely balanced with a round mouthfeel. The fruit is all plummy with some minerality with a spicy eucalyptus backend that might come from some barrel char. Nice brightness. Th...

I’ve been loading up on “cheap” ‘16 and ‘17 PYCM at K&L ($35-$60), using my auction winnings as credit (and thus saving 15%)... and I must say, the 4-5 bottlings I’ve tried so far have all been delicious.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the 16s I’ve tried. I’ve ordered some 17s too based on the positive reviews by William Kelley. The few 15s I’ve had have been a bit too ripe and big for my palate, at least for drinking young.

Nice notes, Noah. Love old vintage claret. Had a 73 Mouton once which was magically complex for about 30 mins and then cracked up completely.
74 was great in Cali and Piedmont, Nic. Hard to find those wines these days though, especially the Californian ones.

The 2014 SM was $28 with free shipping for a long while, but I didn’t pull the trigger for some reason (too much wine). I haven’t had that vintage but that’s got to be great QPR.

Yeah, Barolo often takes longer than Bordeaux to come around! I find Nebbiolo sensitive to over extraction too where a modernist approach can blow up the tannins into a hard mess. The 98 Grand Mayne sure is a winner, and ready to go. Got my doubts about the more recent versions, the 09 was pretty ov...

In my experience of this kind of self-inflicted abuse, the danger time is roughly between 7pm and 8.30pm. Patrick I fasted for two days last week, so it will take some time to recover from that.
