Update.... I have managed to weather the divorce and have emerged with my half of the collection. Bought a home and am renovating....It's amazing how hard divorce is on a person. Just finished the wine cellar and will soon bring my beauties to their new home. So, I am back in the Bordeaux purchase m...

Interesting questions, Jim. I’ve been collecting for a long time and can’t really say I have seen or heard of any wine fraud with certainty. However, I have never been a chaser of the really hard to find/acquire wine.

A dear friend of mine recently gifted me a signed copy of The Cook Book by Oscar of the Waldorf. I thought I would share a couple of photos for your amusement. I'm past tasting 300 wines and hope to finish tasting the remaining ones at the end of May. Only wait for wines from D.d.Chevalier and Leoville Las Cases to arrive at the beginning of June. Then I hope to finish my report approximately 2 weeks after. I think I'll not be buying 2020, except few bott...

A big thumbs up to the 2018 Lytton Springs zinfandel blend as well. Had both and would say the are worthy of purchase. Lytton is vibrant, acidity that cleanses the palate, a streak of tannin and lots of old-fashioned, old school zin flavors.

I spent part of my Honeymoon at Meadowood back in '96. Purchased a 3 magnum case of the first three vintages (90-92) along with a few 750's. Sold the magnum set in '98 for $3800 for the same reason and bought a bunch of Bordeaux, Northern Rhone and Burgundy with the proceeds. So glad.

Apologies for being late to the party.
2016 Sociando Mallet for WOTY and my QPR of the year is 2016 Potensac.
These two wines have been consistently good right out of the gate and will age very well. 2016 = Magical Vintage

I agree with the philosophy of calibrating against a first growth or other higher-end Bordeaux, especially one from a good to excellent vintage with some age on it. Chasing points or rarities with dollars makes no sense to me.....too much excellent Bordeaux in the $100 or less range.

Interesting article from the BBC:

Comical that China is accusing the Aussies of dumping practices. On the good side for US consumers, perhaps we will see more Aussie wine here next year.

I think the Bordelais are going to have a tough time selling through their 2017 and 2018 vintage offerings considering that these wines were priced considerably higher than where the 2019’s were offered out at on futures amidst COVID so we shall see what transpires. Especially given the strength of...

Re: Napa Valley is burning
Yes. Most of the vines survived the fires but the outlook is dim for making wines from the grapes. The issue is that smoke resin has been deposited on grape skins which is then released into the juice during maceration and as fermentation converts sugars into alcohol. Another link below form WS on t...

Thanks gents, interesting article. I'm still buying 2016s, from all appellations.... I think that's a wise decision. I suspect in 10 years we'll look back and say, damn 2014, 2015, and 2016, what a stretch. I agree, and dare I say that 2014-2018 is the best five year run ever for red Bordeaux!

I loved Potensac, Fonenil and LV Cure. Fronsac killed it in 2016. I had all on release and found them simply delicious...my kind of vintage. I consumed a Potensac recently and found it to be shutting down....it will age well, however.

A few things come to mind.... 1) Buy some well-stored Bordeaux that is 15, 10, 5 years old and new release, from good, not great vintages or other wines in the categories you wish to collect....all from the same producer. Open them together and taste so you know what you like in terms of aging. This...

Rodano 2016 is awesome. Posner at Grapes has it for $15 per. Stylistically this was a bit brooding when I first purchased it but recent bottles have been seamless, elegant and long. I love a good Chianti and a recent favorite is the 2016 Rodano. To me, Chianti is one of the most satisfying wines to drink. They don't have a lot of complexity (aged Felsina and higher end Chianti's excluded) but they are so food friendly, especially with the correct cuisine. When I want a Brunello...
