I predict my over under is a couple of weeks.
But a slow down is certainly necessary.

3 bottles of 1989 Haut Brion, and I am going into a Summer hibernation, and do my best not to buy anything until September. I will fail of course, but I am a living example that I am proof against anything except temptation.

2 x 3 packs of 2020 La Conseillante WK rated 100 I have tried it, and it is very good, though not sure it is 100 pts… Huh. That might be the first time Conseillante ever got 100 points from a major critic. Long overdue in a sense, but I’d also be pretty surprised if the 2020 was actually the best C...

Great tasting.

Well I have to plug the VCC 2005. One of the three wines of the vintage (Ausone and Latour). This was the wine that began my love affair with the estate. But it is taking its time. I bought a case of half bottles and now have had half a dozen. Still a wine more about its future than its present, alt...

As buyers of wine, do you buy a great third tier wine from a top vintage such as 2005 Issan or a second tier wine, Lynch Bages, from a lesser vintage such as 2004?

I had a 1993 La Mission recently which was easily the best wine there. Unusually everybody agreed. That being said, there are off vintages and off vintages. Weather defines what is possible, the limits of quality. At the bottom are vintages such as 1977, 1984, 1991, 2013. All dismal; if you find som...

For me precision is a combination of structure and flavor. Comparing the 2009 and 2018, with the 2009 the structure allowed each flavor and nuance to come through clearly while with 2018 it was muddied, everything coming together into an and anonymous single note. It is often, but not always, a pro...

The first bottle, opened a couple ago was corked, so we moved on to other wines. Today I opened a second bottle, and was initially disappointed. The color was deep is red, and a few stray wisps coming from the decanter promised much, but when I poured a glass, it seemed drab and not very interesting...

Re: Figeac vertical tasting - do I join the Rolland haters?
I think most critics consider the wines being made today are better than the same wines thirty years ago. For the most part they are undoubtedly cleaner, the selection is more careful, and there is plenty of new technology around. The problem for me is that the wines tend to be riper, more alcoholic...

Jouan is probably the best Burgundy buy out there, but the cost differential between the village and Clos Sorbe is relatively small for the huge jump in quality, I tend to focus on them. CSD is a bigger jump in cost but about the same jump in quality.

Flummoxed.
Have not tasted the 2020s yet, as I like a little age on my Burgs. Don’t have Brouillard but have Santenots and Chenes. Will open a Santenots in the next week or so.
Have been drinking 2010s with pleasure.

Just opened a couple of bottles. I think you will enjoy it.
The alcohol level is listed at 14.5%. I am nearly 100% sure it is much less than that, and suspect the high number may be Trump tariff related.

I get your reservations about the property. I have never had a great Gassies, I have had good ones, the 2000 being one of them. But even the good ones are not close to Rauzan Segla, although many of the vineyards are interspersed.

The last interesting Pape Clement for me was 1998. After that it turned to the dark side, and turned with a vengeance. Seems they might be emerging
I do wish they would change the name. Pope Clement was a vicious anti Semite, as well as a seriously nasty piece of work.

Nice note Mark on an unbeknownst to me wine but see Touton has got the 2016 so will have to order some. So out of curiosity, were the DB and LMHB both 2016’s as well or … ? The other wines there included a 2003 and 2009 Gruaud Larose, a 2009 reserve de la Comtesse and the clear winner the 1993 LMHB...

Ch Pitray 2016. A steal at $14
Not a wine on my radar usually. From Castillon. Retails for 6 Euros in Europe apparently, and $14 here. This was completely unexpected. A traditional well made Bordeaux, a couple of years off its peak. Everything about it was slightly better than expected, the nose more complex, the balance really s...

While Thunder in London is being conducted in front of a howling crowd, a lesser but no less important event is being planned for the same night. Sadly, there will be no crowd and no howling, but the shock waves from this tasting will prove far more far reaching than a battle between two, too young ...

This is a perfect example of arbitrage for me. I was thinking about the Latour 2015 at around $650, a good price for the Latour when I saw an offer of 3 magnums of Montrose 2016. This is a great, possibly legendary Montrose; the exchange rate is 2 magnums of Montrose for one bottle of Latour. Montro...

Re: Who’s indubitably making their best wine ever?
I would rule out Giscours, not because the wines are not good-they are. But the wines from the seventies are every bit as good, and for most of the decade, it was between Palmer and them for who made the best wines in Margaux. And yes, they were that good. The debate centers around style and which p...
