Found Rauzan Segla 2020 in London at a bargain $74. Also Haut Brion 2020 for $450. I know the 2022 prices are not sticking and will likely come down, but I still backfilling with ‘16 if you can find them, ‘19 and ‘20 makes sense.

Those chicken thighs on the slow cook are super crispy and the lamb chops are ready roll. Grilled some potato slices along with corn on the cob (hello summer!). Sociando is opening up, much richer than earlier. Red fruit is really coming thru along with some forest floor. Amazing that in the meanti...

Ok sold.
You may have to come to Westchester to pick up the wines and we may have to do a lobster dinner offline to make sure they are decent.

BTW I hope you don’t mind a quick commercial, if anybody is interested in half a dozen bottles each of 2020 Vergers and Malatroie, I had to buy a 12 bottle case to buy a couple of Grand Crus. I am happy to keep six of each and was planning to sell the other six at my cost, which is $88. Currently in...

The French say "Comparaison n'est pas raison". But... When I think about ageing wine, I think about US presidents. US presidents? Well, if it's a choice between a John F. Kennedy or a Joe Biden, I'll take the former. The young guy full of spirit and punch, as opposed to the old guy who ha...

So I assume you guys have found CellarRaiders a reliable source of old Bordeaux? He often has stuff I am interested in but I have been gun shy so far. People swear by Cellaraiders, but I gave up because too often bottle conditions were not described (because VHS is “normal for wines from the 80’s”)...

A few wines
Leoville Las Cases 1985/1989. I am not a fan of the extracted vintages of Las Cases, but these two alongside the 1996 are well worth buying.
A single bottle each of Drouhin Musigny 2019 and the ever young Magdelaine 1982.

I have been drinking a lot of Bordeaux lately, a few Burgundies but not much else. Bought some magnums in the UK, but had a couple of bottles here, so thought I would brave the heat and try one. Glad I did. 2008 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto Le Rocche del Falletto Riserva A young pup indeed, but an ...

Of course not totally obliterated, but terroir definitely begins to disappear north of 14% and if it does hit 15% I get absolutely no sense of place and no complexity. It doesn’t help that the balance goes awry, and there is an overall impression of heat. Still waiting on my 2020 VCC, but the ‘15 wa...

I would agree with you that the top wines in Pauillac are the three first growths, although I thInk Mouton is the weakest of the three as it is far less consistent. That being said, the original question was about value, and is the marginal increase in quality worth the massive increase in price? In...

Re: Market post - First Growth price premium
I think the price premium is more a function of wealth distribution (HHI etc.) than a warranted qualitative premium. But that's ok! I'd rather a Beijing billionaire is making Lafite/Cola cocktails, and pumping up prices in a category I would not participate in, than dabbling in estates where I'd ra...

At the time of the 1855 classification, the differential between first growths and the top seconds was around 40%. The largest gap ever was around 2012, when Lafite increased to 800%, and the other firsts around 500%. This coincided with the height of he Chinese Bordeaux craze; the difference is now...

Re: Article on Wine Searcher summarizes the problems of 2022 Bordeaux.
I don’t see any reason why the negociants would do that as they have no say in the pricing.
What I am expecting to see more of are cases of mixed vintages, which will help both trade and chateau to move bad vintages.

Re: Article on Wine Searcher summarizes the problems of 2022 Bordeaux.
I think there are plenty of great Bordeaux values out there. In fact, compared to Burgundy, Bordeaux even at the high end is a terrific value. But they have huge quantities to sell, and plenty of competition, so the pricing and the message behind the pricing, should not be “let’s screw the consumer....

https://www.wine-searcher.com/m/2023/07/bordeaux-en-primeur-leaves-a-bad-taste A excellent article. Sums up my fairly negative thoughts about the vintage. The Bordelais got greedy (again) and the sales were mediocre. Finally there is the beginning of pushbacks from the negociants. There was always a...
