Have you long been a Haut Bailly fan, DG? It seemed like an under the radar chateau until kinda recently, despite making consistently great wines since the 60’s or longer. The 79 is one of those largely unheralded gems.

Happy to expand this to all wines... My top producers in order (irrespective of white, red, desert or all of the above, with 30 bottles or more) : 1. Ridge (by far.. nearly all red, but a few chardonnay and stickies) 2. Produttori de Barbaresco (nearly all riservas) 3. Magdelaine 4. Huet 5. Sociando...

Hey Blanquito, what were the 16 bottles of GPL you offloaded over the last two years? Sales or drinking? Specifically curious as to whether you have been drinking a lot of 1995 and 2005 GPL as I have a good number of those and wondering about your view of where those are on the maturation curve… I ...

Re: Under $40 (US) bordeaux that's still classic?
Many of the usual QPR suspects still seem reasonably traditional. I’m seeing you get can recent releases of Gloria, Sociando Mallet, Ferriere, d’Armailhac, and Branaire Ducru at or just above $40. du Tertre can be had for around that price too, but while not spoofilated, they are not really traditio...

That looks like only about 700 bottles of Bordeaux? Aren’t you running a bit short? If there’s some kind of catastrophic apocalyptic event and you are trapped in your wine cellar with only wine to drink you might run out of Bordeaux before you die…better rectify that! I am pleased to announce I hav...

UPDATE: "a return to sanity", GPL is no longer my largest BDX holding. After an extensive cellar rationalization over the last couple of years (mostly achieved by selling off certain 'frauds' and fruit bombs), here are my current Bordeaux holdings (all chateau with at least 10 bottles): M...

2022 futures? Really? Does anyone (outside of the business, naturally) still care? We are all sheep. I know the wine press constantly beats the futures drum, but that’s just because they are part (bought snd sold) of the idiot-loop industry. We should spend a whole year on BWE only talking about rea...

I’ve always liked some 95s, most notably the PLL, GPL, Cos, Sociando, Ducru. Surprisingly I’m less enamored with 95 RB though on the whole I think that bank is stronger.

Re: The 2010 Fleur Cardinale has been uncorked, and other ramblings....
Glad to hear Fleur Cardinale is being taken a new direction. After trying unfortunately numerous bottles of the 03 and 05 FC -- which were amongst the most revolting Bordeaux I've ever tried, and it sounds like the 2010 is still in that same modern over-the-top boozy style of the 03 and 05 -- I utte...

Re: 2000 Domaine de Chevalier (rouge)
P.S. I think Gilman’s perspective is particularly germane, given his well documented aversion to globby Bordeaux. And of course, he’s tasted the 05s in far more depth and breadth than most of us have.

Don’t take a bunch of amateurs’ opinions, here’s Gilman on the 05 vintage… “ Of the recent, highly-praised vintages in Bordeaux- 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2010, only the 2005 vintage stands out for me as a truly great vintage on the Gironde, with the others masquerading power and overripe fruit as if it ...

Re: 2000 Domaine de Chevalier (rouge)
I’m still mostly waiting on my 05s (big surprise there), but from what I’ve tried I think, more than most vintages, the 05 vintage served as a Rorschach test of a chateau’s style — big, extracted, designer consultant-designed, Parkerized wines (of which there were many in that period) made notably b...

Yeah, put me in the 05-DCC-sucks camp too. It sucked (for me) irrespective of DDC's glorious past. The 09 was pretty awful too.
And I put my money where my mouth (palate) is, selling off all of my post-02 DDC rouge a few years ago (a bunch of 05, a few 06s, and a brace of 09s).

Curious of your impressions on the '19, Mark. I was thoroughly impressed with the '20 at the UGC, enough that I bought some of the '19 and tried a bottle after it arrived in March. Re: 2000 Domaine de Chevalier (rouge)
Along side the Canon, PLL, and Magdelaine, DDC is probably my favorite red Bordeaux from 1970-1989.
So, it’s really nice to see how good it still was in 2000. I will look to backfill this from the 95-02 vintages.

2000 Domaine de Chevalier (rouge)
Enchanting bouquet, delicate, expressive, a little sweet and cedary with a whiff of Gravesy char, floral with minty notes and a touch of fresh herbs. 94-95 pt bouquet. Lighter bodied, tangy and bright on the palate, but with plenty of grip and persistence. Savory-sappy and a little sour, so refreshi...
