Why would you risk your reputation by drinking a Cali fizz from a can and talk about it? What were you drinking

Re: Pinot time

Remoissenet had a great Givry. They can be light and satisfying or more full and take age nicely. One of Burgundys better values. A lot of selenium in the soil there, which gave me a reason to open more than one bottle a night back in the late 80's and early 90's with salmon. The protective effect o...

TN: 1996 Château Pedesclaux (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac)

1996 Château Pedesclaux - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (6/10/2013) Dark center with garnet rim, up nose of dark fruits, light cedar and currants. Medium weight in body but as the wine evolves in glass great flavors that build on the palate. A real terroir-like wine that only claret gives. Long...

all vintages in the past were excellent . Again, Bob L. or one of his delegates have continued to be great. JM

Re: Few wines from the last few days, and I like Chablis!

Can't recall a premox Chablis and I drink a few of them. They meet a lot of "needs" in a combination of a lively yet serious nature, the perfect reflective/hedonistic glass on a hot low country summer or a cool New England fall. The producers that have kept the true racy nature of this app...

My first guess would be the vintage but I haven't had enough Cal cabs from 09 to say. It was a cool growing season by one report which confirms your comment about modest vintage ratings for 09. If an average vintage in Cal regarding Cabs gives elegance and structure then I will take it. Will be in N...

Nice to find a Napa cab with the great fruit of a prestigious site but not at all jammy-classic claret structure. Should be a BWE style but I don't dismiss more fruity Cal cabs. This winery has generally been tops to me, but there are surely different opinions out there. The vintage or winemaking/vi...

Never thought I would be posting a Portuguese red as I have only had 2 the last 5 years. But what a pleasing wine. Lively red berry fruits in nose with light currants. Oh yes, a 2008 vintage and 14.5% but it doesn't show unless you read the label and then look for it. Round and easy on the palate wi...

What a great Burgundy tasting and a great lineup of vintages, with the '88 the only weak link. But you did a great job of describing the best the 88 had to offer. Nice to see the 85's still giving class, and oh those 99s. Reading your notes over and over. Morey has always had a structured minerality...

Haven't tasted many 08s so interested in the weight/style of the vintage, albeit through one wine. The palate followed- simple fruity flavors with almost no complexity devel...

Re: The Most "Normal" Bordeaux Vintage Is:

You hear very little today about finesse in todays modern style. While I think riper, healthier grapes (all the great vintages of the past were the ripest) have yielded better wines, it is important that these current wines develop this traditional characteristic. Cellar time will only do this of co...

I have probably consumed more wines form this village that any other in Burgundy. Good notes on an average vintage at best, but they do grow on you after being in the glass a while. Jim's latest post is spot on in my view. There is a lot of choices today, and I am afraid that most consumer preferences are not tilted toward inexpensive claret, at least on this side of the pond. The other countries Jim mentions are a big part of the story-many choices for the consumer. But I am r...

Re: Poll: In general, is Bordeaux under $30 worth buying?

The lack of quality in ïnexpensive Bordeaux is a big reason California, and other new world wine regions, took off. But part of this quality gap had to do with the new world climates yielding ripe grapes, hence a plumper, fruitier style that most new worlders preferred. If $30 and under claret is now...
