Thanks for the link Chris. Great photo of you in Le Figaro. I like what he wrote about the 1997 Trimbach Clos Sainte Hune, that "the Riesling Clos Ste Hune fabulous 1997 Trimbach which was unanimous in its complexity and minerality." Although, he sounded a bit aloof with the article''s tit...

Congratulations to your nephew Ramon. Sounds like you opened some seriously good bottles. Thanks for the notes - especially the '88 Beaucastel. Don't see TNs on that one too often. Got a double mag waiting to be opened for our 25th anniversary next year. The '66 Malescot sounds like it's aged beaut...

Re: Graduation wines: Saint Emilion, Margaux & other French

I've just recently had a couple of Matrot reds from 2005, don't remember which was which but just to add to the Matrot confusion, one was from Pierre and the other was from Thierry/Pascale. The Volnay-Santenots and the Blagny. Both were drinking nicely. Good pinot that I found to be slightly on the ...

Mark, I didn't think that the green taste was intrusive, nor out-of-whack, within the context of the whole structure. I just scanned CT and noted what I thought may be similar descriptor, such as "bitterness", "tea leaves", "forestfloor?" and yet these TNs gave 90+ rati...

Re: The 2009 Gruaud Larose has arrived

I'll have to figure out a time to shoot up to NYC to pick it up. Maybe we can arrange a BWE dinner with some of the NYC contingent, which could be a lot more exciting than the wine is showing right now. I don't have any 2009's (yet). But would gladly help get a dinner going when you come to pick yo...

Bill,

I've not tried any Chevillon '03 nor '04. But am a Chevillon-head with earlier vintages stashed away. I'd like to try the 2003s. Is it because of the noted hot vintage that makes you say that none are pure expression of pinot noir?

Thanks for sharing your notes, especially on those very old bottles. That’s an awesome lineup of wines. Very glad about the positive showing of the 1997 Trimbach Clos Sainte Hune. I've not had many Trimbach’s without much mineral expression before, so this was quite surprising. Should I request to h...

I have been impressed with the very few '98 left bank wines that I've had. I've not had LLC, but I liked Barton, Ducru (this one, I thought, was really impressive for the vintage), Malescot, Haut Brion, LMHB and a smattering of few others.

Yes, Dale and a few of the other usuals that Matt (who we missed and is currently in NZ) and Arv (in CA) used to assemble for the local Bdx tastings. Dale and I have been carrying on the organizing, until Matt comes back, and we've sort of been going outside of the Bordeaux-tasting norm on occasion.

Glad the 2004 Madelaine is not the "here, there and everywhere" kind of wine. It's one of my prefered RB producer that doesn't hit my uncomfortable pricing range, especially given that it is almost always well made while keeping its traditonal styling. I notice that Gilman, an enjoyable an...

The only Grand Corbin Despagne I've ever had was the 2000. Bought only after chancing upon a case at $150 a couple of years ago. I thought that it was still quite closed when I had a bottle then, yet I was impressed enough and am looking forward to drinking after a few more cellar years.

Domaine Trimbach is my most preferred Alsace producer. I buy the Cuvee Frederick Emile riesling year in and year out. As far as average or summing total points are concerned, my take on it is you should only take half the points for the 375s and double 'em for the magnums.

That ‘98 du Cauze sounds good. I’ve never heard of the producer, but I bet it’s one that makes AlexR proud. I wish it was easy to find … anywhere. That’s a good segue into the benefit of “airing”. Ironic, indeed, that the BdM worked well with my cassoulet. Perhaps, it's because it was drinking very well, nicely-aged and devoid of all those harsh tannin that I got from almost all of the other reds.

There is a big difference between 2005 and 2009. 2005 was purchased in massive quantities by American merchants, wholesalers and importers. There was a lot of stock around to offer at discount.
