T&C will inexplicably show up in our mailbox for 4-6 months every year or two.

I’ve only had Charmail once, the 2000. I liked it, found it a bit smoky and oaky with decent fruit and balance, but it didn’t impress me enough to stand out. The 2015 is available locally for ~$29.

Re: Bordeaux Vs. Shiraz

Gremlins, I think part of the issue is that the Australian wines exported to the US are (were?) not representative of what the country has to offer. The Parker-driven Grateful Palate style of really ripe Shiraz that comprised the bulk of the Aussie invasion in the 90s got a lot of us to jump on thos...

Re: What Savvy Wine Buyers Should Know About the Points System

Hound, the TL/DR version: 1. Critics garner greater visibility with high scores. 2. Suckling awards 95 points to 10% of the wines he rates, 2-3 times more often than other critics. 3. Retailers use high scores to make buying decisions and to sell wines 4. Consumers buy on points and will buy anythin...

Re: Poll: What is your SECOND favorite red wine region....

Very nice summary Danny. My feelings about Burgundy mirror yours. The reds are too hard to navigate, even though a few have been among my all-time favorite wine experiences. Too low a percentage. I love(d) white Burgs and was really into aging them before premox hit. Even though young white Burgs ca...

Bordeaux
Rhône N and S
Napa
Champagne
Mosel
Ribera del Duero
Porto
Piedmont
Burgundy (would rank much higher if whites didn’t premox)

Thanks for posting LPB's and Neal Martin's vintage notes. Cool growing season, lighter wines, crisp and fresh wines with less density and aging potential. Are alcohol levels trending lower as well? Another group of 2007-like "luncheon clarets?" I enjoy these early guesses at where the wine...

The aromatics and lychee in Gewurtztraminer are a turn off for many. I love it, but would tire of it if I had it regularly. A sweet Gewurtz like your Weinbach, Nic, or the one Jacques pulled for us in Sarasota a few months ago is a real treat.

I went through my Parker-driven Aussie phase. It didn't last long. I sold or gifted most of the 98-point ooze-monsters and held on to most of the Grange. Opened a 1989 Grange last week that was excellent. A couple of bottles of Glaetzer Amon-Ra weren't too over the top. Still have one of those. Carn...

Alex, it’s odd seeing you argue against the concept that Parker had an outsized influence in Bordeaux. But I agree that one man cannot do it alone. He was the assisted by thousands of consumers that bought his recommendations and drove up prices, and by the owners of the top estates who saw which si...

Agree. I love CellarTracker but I don’t put much faith in average scores. Even after Parker and outside of Bordeaux, the scores all seem to be between 89 and 93. There are several possible reasons for that besides me-tooism, but I’m amazed at how often I’ll see a score in the 90s with a TN that exco...

Re: Poll: Have alcohol levels risen because of Robert Parker?

Most of the higher alcohol levels are attributable IMO to the growers'/winemakers' choices to pick later and riper. Climate has assisted them, but whether that’s random statistical fluctuation or global warming can be debated. Not denying global warming here, just saying it’s hard to know how much i...
