Somehow I knew you had a case of this in your cellar, Jon
I actually have two cases - a long story, but I don't regret having it.

Back to wine: 2000 Pontet Canet

I will pass on most of what I've seen here the past couple of days and hope it's mostly a lot of "guys being guys" when being "challenged" by one another. I was always sort of a "pacifist" about being a guy, so it's hard for me to understand this stuff. Anyway, my first...

Re: A historic royal BWE visit to the Great State of Maine

Kind of amazing how the BWE family lives on after over 20 years. I know from my occasional visits to "annual" dinners that it's like seeing old friends again. I don't get much opportunity to participate in the events of the past several days, but it's fun to live them vicariously.

A 1982 purchased in the village of St. Emilion in 1993 and drunk in 1995 was an eye opener for me as far as aged Bordeaux wines. Sadly, I've not found myself buying much more over the years, mostly for pricing reasons. As a reference point, the 1982 was $12 US in 1993.

I've only tasted it once at a small vertical tasting. It definitely lacked the structure and heft of most of the others. But I found it quite enjoyable and remember describing it as "very feminine."

Great tasting of wines that we often don't have a lot to choose from (at least where I am in the midwest of the US).

Re: Caymus 40th Anniversary 2012

I had a few bottles of Caymus from the 1980s, but stopped buying around 1990 when I thought it was getting too expensive. I broke down and bought a bottle of the 2012 (40th anniversary) because it was on sale, and figured I'd open it with someone who liked Napa cabs. It's still in the cellar, and Ma...

Quite a nice investment there, BD/WBM. The basic village wine is $90 on Winesearcher (only 1 source), and newer vintages are over $100 most places.

Sounds lovely. I do not have the 2016, but do have a case of the 2015, which I hope is nearly as good as your experience. I think this producer may be flying under the radar in Margaux from what I have read in recent years.

Sounds like great travels, Jacques. We were in the Loire last fall doing a self guided bike tour that visited a few of the chateaux you saw. We also visited Clos Lucé on a free morning and found it fascinating. I'm envious of your upcoming 2 weeks in Provence.

Nic, glad you liked it. In my experience, Cotes du Rhone wines tend to be "no brainers" for basic good quality wines. I tend to keep 3/4 producers in case quantities for regular drinking.

Alex, I appreciate you taking the time to share your observations and thoughts on this. I think you hit on something important with respect to the importance of "balance" in a wine. That may be the key to making sense out of much of this.

The best I have read is that they believe it was lifted up on two large waves on either end, and it basically broke apart in the middle.

Lucky you! We were there not long after it opened and actually walked in with no reservation and had a great dinner. On subsequent trips, we were not aggressive enough to wake at 4:00 am to snag a reservation, so the first meal has been our only one.

On the basis of Felsina's year in and year out consistency (and a couple of reviews), I just ordered a case of the 2020 basic chianti classico. I suspect it will be just my first case of that wine. Somehow those bottles just seem to disappear . . .
