Re: I'm going to make a bold statement (about 2009 Haut-Bergey).

On the affordable side of things, I'd also recommend the 09 Gloria. In terms of elegance, I'd put it between the Haut Bergey and Giscours. It was also another one of those wines that improved 24 hours after opening. I think it'll prove to be a very nice wine and a very good deal. Makes me wonder abo...

Re: Of blizzards and Sociando....

I should have paid more attention to the snow on the table rather than the railings. It clearly has way more snow on it! I agree that maintaining power is key. Hope ours doesn't go out. I've got a neighbor like yours too; aren't they great?! My neighbor's a retired guy with a love of his snow blower...

Re: Of blizzards and Sociando....

Based on the amount of snow on the railings, doesn't look too bad. Snow just starting to fall here now. We've been told it will change to freezing rain and then liquid rain over night. It will be one hell of a mess.

Thanks, Ken. Starr's book sounds interesting, as do the articles. I have access to the JHPPL here so can chase them down if I decide to read them.

Re: Of blizzards and Sociando....

Maybe I should get myself a bottle of that juice. I could use a real man's wine since that storm of yours is supposed to hit us tomorrow evening. We've been told to expect 25 cm of snow. That's no where near 2', but it's bad enough. I don't look forward to the shoveling.

Re: Suckling goes gaga over the 2010's

Those prices are nuts! I can't imagine how they'll translate up here in the Great White North! There's a lot of 06 in the system up here still, and its pricing is beginning to look mighty good. Might also be time to take another look at some 08s, eg., Pichon Baron, Pontet Canet, Haut Bailly, DomChev...

Tasting notes and wine assessment

"But if Nic finds violets in a dauzac, am I gonna go out and buy the 2010?" This statement by Jim over in the long thread caused me to think about the way we judge and assess wines. In going over my tasting notes, I noticed that a lot of them read alike. And when it comes down to it, they ...

I'm interested in his claim that the 09 supply is very low. Can that be verified? Do we have to buy big now, or forget it?

Has anybody seen the recent issue of the World of Fine Wine? Apparently it has a reassessment of 08! They're a pretty thorough bunch usually.

Re: Poll: HWSRN: Has he been good or has he been bad for Bdx?

Just a juxtaposition of two of John Gilman's "tweets" which I thought spoke to some of the issues being discussed in this thread: 1. "Magically soil-driven '83 Leoville-Poyferre recalls the salad days of property, when they always strutted their terroir but didn't sell well" 2. &...

I'm either lazy or forgetful, Jim, but did you taste -- and review -- the 09 Sociando yet? Trying to decide whether to pull the trigger on it, or pick up what few 05s remain on the shelf here.

Re: 2009 Cantemerle

After day 4 this continues to improve. Specifically, the brightness that I found too sharp upon opening continues to tone down resulting in what is for me a wine with a better balance between the tannins and the acid. I hope someone else will try it; perhaps giving it a long decant first. It remains...

What, no Sociando? Or do you already have some? Also, for those looking for a more affordable option, the Haut Batailley is worth taking a look at in its 09 guise. Since raising the game at Ducru Beaucaillou and GPL, the Borie group seem to be turning their attention to Haut Batailley. Which makes m...

Modern Pessac may be gone for the lovers of old style Bdx. I remember reading somewhere -- wish I could remember where -- that Pessac had moved more towards the right bank in wine making technique than any other left bank region. As far as Haut Bailly goes, does anyone own the 08s? HB is supposed to...

Re: Poll: HWSRN: Has he been good or has he been bad for Bdx?

By today's standards 04 wasn't horribly priced either, and it did suffer P's ratings. The price of a bottle of 09 PC blows me away when I recall what I paid for the 04s (taking the horrible Canadian tax structure into account, it would translate to about $40 USD). O4 is the only year that I bought t...

I haven't voted yet, because I can't decide. Is Parker responsible for Chinese billionaires wanting Lafite? I don't even know how to determine such a thing. 2009 Cantemerle

Just opened this. Now this is different again from either the Gloria, the Giscours, or the Haut Bergey. It's medium bodied, thus lighter than the other 09s I've tried. Brighter and with more of an edge, i.e., not as round as so many other 09s. Ripe fruit, but more red than black: red currents, raspb...

I don't think you can go wrong with that, Jim. I'll tell you what wouldn't be worth it -- the Phelan Segur. It was quite a bit spoofier than the HB. It had no hint, for example, of that "light on its feet" quality. All gooey and thickly viscous.

Okay, I may not be the wine advocate, but I think I'd like to play devil's advocate for the moment. 1. How can 09 be a great vintage if it's just another Parkerized vintage where all the wines taste the same? 2. In a related vein, if some of us are declaring our love of a thinner style over the thic...

I opened this 24 hours ago. I wasn't quite sure what I thought at the time, but after 24 hours things are a little clearer. It's got the 2009 signature -- plush, ripe, soft, dark red and black fruit; and lots of licorice. Some herbal elements, and a touch of menthol and maybe a bit of tar on the end...

I guess there's a bit of consensus forming around this wine. I think it might have a bit more oomph than what I'm otherwise reading here, and I still see it as a pretty good value play. It's head and shoulders above the Phelan Segur (although I seem to be the only person who dislikes this wine, most...
