2000 Chasse Spleen

Drink 'em if you got 'em. This is really drinking nicely now. Classic Bdx. Suave and sophisticated, elegant and smooth. Not the most complex in the Medoc, but wonderful fruit and terroir: bramble, leather, smoke, black berry, graphite, ash, bit of cassis, bit of methol. This could restore your faith...

Uselessness of Primeurs

I'm not sure how well known these practices are, but since so much rides on the Primeurs tastings, including prices, the fact that they're rigged seems scandalous to me:

Okay, just to be contrary (even against myself). For the sake of science, how about buy one bottle and give it a whirl. I'm sure we'd all love to hear that our initial advice was wise. :-)

2005 Ch. d'Issan

Damn, this is a beautiful wine. This is what Bdx is about, this is what the 2005 vintage is about. Control, tension, balance, pizzaz, but no gooey sticky 09ism. Strong emotive flavours, but clean in the mouth. This is still primary, as you might expect, but it's so very good; intellectual and sensua...

Sorry for the thread drift, but it's conundrum time. If a bottle of the 06 LeoP were the same price as the 04 DucruB, which would you go for? If anyone's had both, a comparison would be appreciated.

As for the 09 LeoP, $210 seems high to me too, especially considering the price of the 08.

2004 Cos d'Estournel

In accord with the dictates of the BD, a nice northern Medoc this weekend! The 04 Cos d'Estournel is going to be a very fine wine. Right now it's still a little tight and the tannins are still holding their own, so to speak. But it's a very nice wine nonetheless, and I can't wait to open my next bot...

Yes, the veneer of civilization is indeed thin! Wish I could try the 03 Montrose, but it's an arm and a leg up here. Holy mother Ishtar this is a nice wine. I think I like it better than the Duhart. What an elegant, balanced, complex, and finesse oriented wine. Jim, you interested in opening one of those 09 Calon Segurs for science? I would sure love to hear your opinion on them. We also need to establish a baseline for CS for this decade so we will be able to determine whether the recent sale of the winery will propel them into the Parkerized camp!

Jim, your relationship with HWSRN is a fascinating one. You go on at length about his role in the wine world, yet when it comes to tasting notes of individual wines, you so often agree with him. Not always to be sure (eg. 09 Giscours), but more often than not. Anyone here teach in a psych dept?

Get the 08 before it's gone! It's the last of the old style with a price tag that is anywhere near affordable. My biggest Figeac disappointment: about 2 yrs ago I passed on a half case of the 06. Rethinking my decision I returned to the store and voila, it was gone! I really like the 06 Figeac!

Sipping on a glass of the 08 now. Nothing Parkerized about this wine. Indeed, about as far from a Parker style wine as I can imagine. Light and clean in the mouth; no syrup or viscosity in this wine! Good line of acid keeping it all crisp; perhaps even a bit tart towards the end though. Noticeable t...
