Re: TN: 2000 Château Lagrange St. Julien (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien)

I do not have any Lagrange post 96, but have 9 bottles of the 1996 that I picked up for a tidy $18.99 each. I did not go deep in 2000, but splurged on Rauzan Segla at $50. I am still hold backing on pulling 1986's. When, oh when, will it ever become a well developed mature bottle? Some time during m...

Re: TN: CdP Night at the "In DC's": 1989 Beaucastel

That 89 can be a reference settling wine, if one has a pristine bottle. I drank a leaker young that was fine, but I was floored by an initially bretty bottle that spewed barnyard but turned into a majestic example of Beaucastel with power, balance and depth. That was about 7 years ago at Eleven Madi...

Hi Frank, long time no see. I hope all is well.

I have a 1990 Vieux Donjon on deck.

Re: 2001 Ch. la Dominique, St. Emilion

I love this wine for its Burgundy style. The nose is complex and the balance delicate but deep. I scored some 04's on WC for $15 delivered, and it is way better than Parkers barrel 77-79.

The 1989 is much better than the clearly roasted 1990.

Re: Maya's Clone

I really enjoyed the 1992 Dalla Valle last summer, and the 1994 tasted last month was even better than the very good 1992, with an extra layer of everything, without being overdone in any way, and in an excellent style of California fruit, balance and structure. 1992 Cabernets are from a vintage tha...

stefan, Jr. might be able to find some locally. PM me if you need a source.

This is a label that I put on the same level as another new find, Rhys, sharing a similar style and spicy complexity in a Burgundy way.

TN: 2007 Le Cadeau Diversite Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley

Le Cadeau was my biggest discovery from my first Oregon trip. Tom Mortimer has cleared land on Parrett Mountain up the hill from Chehalem, and planted about 12 acres to various rootstocks and mainly Dijon clones, in multiple variations, according to the particular terrior in that section of this slo...

Re: TN: 1993 Jean Tardy Nuits St. Georges Au Bas De Combe

Hi John, I will let you know when I come back East. I had the 1993 Clos Vouget lined up for my brithday in 2005 or 6, and when I put the corkscrew tot he cork, the cork pushed itself in. The wine was bad and I went to a backup. I have one 1993 Boudout left from Tardy.

TN: 1993 Jean Tardy Nuits St. Georges Au Bas De Combe

This is a nicely maturing 1993 that has softened up and resolved into the silky elegance that 15 years of age has brought forth on the tqnnins. Still vibrant acidity anchors forest floor, spice and some red fruits without any funkiness. The finish is moderate to long, and over all is a fine wine tha...

Re: TN: 1998 Clerc Milon

I recall tasting Duhart Milon shortly after release. The lead pencil nose and overall balance were very pleasant, and I bought a couple of bottles. 1998 Left Banks may be better than originally thought. It seems like any Bordeaux vintage including the lesser ones, takes a decade or more to show its ...

Alch, The Lytton Springs vineyard with its old vines is a sight to behold. If you are in Sonoma, they you must make the pilgrimage to Ridge in Dry Creek. They have library wines and ATP selections that do not go to stores for sale there too.

Re: Local TN's

1970 Unico is a great wine, as is 1981. It needs a lot of cellar time to peak. The 1990 Jaboulet La Chapelle that was poured for me by Gerard Jaboulet at a trade tasting shortly after release was a black colored powerhouse that was similar in color and power to 1990 Montrose. I am in no hurry to ope...

Re: My Top Ten Favorite Moments from the "Old" BWE

In addition to the NYC convention, there must be a mention of an NY offline. There are so many to choose from. I recall the first time that I met Jim as we sipped his 1989 Montrose in sheer delight along with Paul North's foil wrapped 1990 Margaux. Mr. Tang's with Pappa Doc at the controls. Fratelli...

Jim, it is interesting that you mention Apollo. I was at the Kennedy Space Center last month in 80 degree temps, and it was an awe inspiring and monumental experience. Re: TN: 1986 Meyney

My botlles cost $15.99 in the late 80's. Now with two decades of cellaring, they are showing really well. Out of my cases of futures from 1989, I have consumed 10 bottles. The 86 has a more complex and developed nose, with an old school structure. Third growth quality.

Re: Do rhones really cut it?

I have had a couple of really good Rhones this month.

2001 Domaine des Remezieres Hermitage was showing classic Syrah gaminess and structure, yet was suprisingly giving .

2000 Charvin was less Burgundian than usual, but was a delightful Grenache.

Sadly, I am buying very few Rhones these days.

Re: TN Couple of Left Coast Pinots

I used to sell Broadley, and really enjoyed their wines. They are a small family operation in the southern portion of the Willamette Valley. I especially remember a complex nose of ripe but not overdone Pinot Noir fruit. I think this is their basic bottling. There are also single vineyard and reserv...

I am glad to see that you enjoyed your 2001. I have been resisting opening my 2 bottles of this same wine in Auslese format.

They were a steal at well under a twenty. Anybody who bought deeply in 2001 will be well rewarded after some more patience.
