2007 Monbrison, Margaux

Another excellent wine from this relatively early maturing vintage. Not profound enough to be an extraordinary wine, but very elegant and pretty classic in style. Fresh acidity, lots of black fruits, minerals, and oriental spices, with a delicate note of bitter chocolate on the back palate. The oak ...

For ages, people create idols, worship them and then destroy them. The last phase of such a spectacle is painful for everyone involved, particularly, of course, for the idol – or should I say the idiot - himself.

Re: I'm running for Congress, and '05 Lartigue has been uncorked

Good luck for your run, Jim! As for the wine, I can’t remember having ever tasted a bottle of Ferrand Lartigue, but your note makes me curious. David, I had a great bottle of 2001 Les Grands Chênes Cuvée Prestige last year - complex, rich and made in a more traditional style. Certainly one of the mo...

Re: Can a winemaker, can make good wines on regular terroir?

Of course, you cannot make wine in the tropics or in the desert, at least not yet. 8-) We are taking about regular terroir, well suited for viticulture. If the terroir is good, and the winemaker is great and wealthy, he can make splendid wines in lesser known appellations, every bit as good as the t...

I have to disagree, David. The skills and the financial resources of the winemakers set the limit, not the terroir. Different terroir only means different flavors in an wine.

Jeff has no love for the "charmless" 94's. Nor me. Even Las Cases was anything but a real pleasure. I have forgotten why, but I actually bought a case of 1994 (not 2004) La Gaffelière. Undoubtedly the worst St.-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé I have ever had. For me, 1994 (not 2004) is the c...

2007 Domaine de Chevalier

I guess, both traditionalists and modernists can find here what their hearts desire. This is a compelling Péssac-Léognan made in a fruit driven, early drinking style, maybe a year or two away from its peak. All delicious, classic ingredients are available in abundance: Spices, cassis, blackberries, ...

Yes, and a hint of port is always appreciated… but big jammy fruits are a stumbling block for any kind of subtlety, high alcohol destroys the balance, too much oak ruins the elegance, and that all together make Bordeaux just new world trash.
