Re: Visit to 4 Médoc châteaux
PXL_20230325_025249445~3.jpg We made chicken Marsala (except with brandy instead of the proper spirit, since we discovered we were out) tonight, so I thought an older Margaux might pair well, since they quasi rhyme. The 2000 Rauzan Gassies [Margaux] was popped and poured, and was pretty tasty. Text...

Re: So what have you bought lately?
A supposedly pristine case of 1994 l’Evangile for $135/bottle all in (including tax) - an overpay but I unfortunately got caught up in the auction and boosted my bid to win it at the last second. I have heard this is actually one of the better wines of the 94 vintage, hope that’s true Three bottles...

I think they are trying to also reposition for a higher price point, and in many cases, packaging matters. I like the new look, although am not really buying new release Sauternes at prevailing prices. It seems like the owners have tried to strike a fair balance between keeping their old clients (wi...

Not trying to blow my own trumpet but I have been a lonely voice arguing the same for a while - amid the overwrought nostalgia for 1980s Bordeaux - it’s good to be in such illustrious company I feel in particular the less heralded names are making much better wines now, but perhaps some of that is ...

Re: 2012 Canon reconsidered...
1961 (at least) through 1989 was an utterly brilliant run at Canon. Of the wines I buy and drink (which includes everything except the Firsts, Palmer, LMHB, Cheval Blanc, Ausone, and a few ultra premium Pomerols), it’s a top 5 chateau for me in that era, maybe even a top 3. SF Ed poured us some 196...

PXL_20230312_020147917~2.jpg My supply of Beau Soleil's is dwindling, so I was happy to find a 2000, enjoying it over the last couple of nights. Was great too see everyone. Bill I have your Loxton's bag in the foyer, btw. I'm not sure what Cantenac Brown goes for on release now, I'd assume $50-75 like the aforementioned d'Issan and Giscours, but I don't think one would be unhappy with cellaring it. Given all the inflation in the region over ...

BWE in the 916
On a wet dreary night a small cadre of Western BWE gathered to pull corks. Winter storms and baby sitter issues had shrunk our numbers, but not our enthusiasm. Most of the wines in the lineup were new to me, at least for vintages. We started with a platter of oysters, green apples, and various chedd...

Congrats on all that news. My car is of similar age, but I put few miles on it. In fact, so few, that the insurance company wanted me to sign an affidavit warranting that. Which I thought was weird given that with all the data floating around there, these firms can very easily check the mileage, sin...

Re: Newbie Question: How do you maintain temperature when decanting for many hours
You can put a squishy cold pack under the decanter, assuming it's a flat bottomed one.
If you are double decanting, just put the bottle back into the cellar / wine fridge.
I wouldn't overthink this; if you're serving in 60Fs temp wise it'll be fine.

For long time consumers of Gloria, do you think this is different than it was a generation ago? I haven't had recent vintages, maybe a 2015 with WilliamP, but it felt like it had more ageability than prior era examples.

Some of those very old Gran Coronas Black Label from that same era/region are also quite impressive.

Re: Decanter
If you were leaving liquids for long periods of time in an (old) leaded crystal decanter it would pose a potential health risk. This would be more likely for spirits/tawny ports left in a library decanter. For regular red wine, decanted and consumed promptly, it's less of an issue. But most of the m...

Of what I have tasted, I have mostly loved 2005. I laid down cases of some the petit chateau / cru bourgeoise which are now finished (Charmail, Cambon La Pelouse, Caronne St. Gemme) and they drank wonderfully for 10-15 years. I still have a box of Lanessan which needs to be surfaced.

My notes / thoughts from a bottle consumed over the last 3 days with Mrs. AKR are almost identical, but it's time to drink up for those who might have any left. PXL_20230126_020126407.jpg Generally, I tend to pass on lighter, non collectible vintages of all regions which is a bias which has of pros and cons (worthy of oh so much debate) but in 2007 I did put away a few Bordeaux to mark that year. The scant few I've opened over the years have performed weak...
