Another fan of the ‘16.
Recently enjoyed a ‘14, though not the equal of the ‘16.
Didn’t buy any ‘19.

Re: I'm making a bold statement: 2019 is the greatest Bordeaux vintage ever, surpassing even the epic 2016 vintage....
I agree with your characterizations Jim and put my money on 2016 and 2019, having bought more of those two vintages than any in the past decade. I just hope I’m around long enough to see them blossom. That’s a comment about my age and preference to drink Bordeaux at 20-30+ years, not about the wines...

Re: Poll: Was Robert Parker a net positive or a net negative for Bordeaux?
Jim revised the question to whether we would have ended up where we are now without Parker, and whether we would still have wines like the Gruauds and Talbots of the 80s. I agree with SFEd that we likely would have ended up in a similar place with or without Parker. He certainly catalyzed the proces...

Re: Poll: Was Robert Parker a net positive or a net negative for Bordeaux?
Net positive and not close for me, though there were definitely negative aspects to his influence. Parker did impact winemaking. For the better early on, and then negatively from the mid-'90s forward. Fortunately, the good changes (cleaner cellars, less rot, less Brett, etc.) are sticking while the ...

Re: 2005 Bordeaux revisited.
GBF, I hope you are correct about 2005 Angelus. That’s one I’m holding but have yet to try. I should crack one. CT notes suggest to me it’s very “modern.” I’m not seeing a lot of suggestions about over-extraction. Though the most recent says it’s shut down and very oaky. What do you mean by “a lamb ...

Re: 2005 Bordeaux revisited.
GBF, I’m not sure what your point is about Parker and the WA. He was still writing the WA Bordeaux reviews when 2005s were bottled. That was at a point when a lot of folks were saying his palate had turned. Nevertheless, I bought a number of 2005s that he extolled in prose and rated highly (97-100 p...

Re: 2005 Bordeaux revisited.
I went long (for me) on 2005s and have about half of them left. It was the last year I bought based heavily on Parker reviews. I was a slow learner. Early hype gave way to concerns for excessive extraction. I drank a lot of the lesser ones and a few of the bigger names at 10-15 years. The overextrac...

Bummer, Danny. Hope that’s the only trigger. Or alternatively if it’s frequent enough something can be done.
Spitting helps for larger events. Less useful for a single bottle at home but if Danielle is drinking and the bottle can be stretched 3 days?

I think it’s been a while since NV Pol Roger has been $25. Not counting crazy NH discounts, that is. We served it at our wedding 36 years ago and IIRC it was in the upper $20s back then. Then again, $25 in 1988 would be $64 today.

I would add 1986 Talbot (I bought a couple for $150 recently), as well as all the usual suspects from 1988, including PLL and Las Cases. No one cares about 1988 anymore, and its great value along with 1983. SF Ed Very wise words. This is exactly where I’d be setting my sights. Well-stored bottles o...

Valid point Ian. But once you get past 20 years or so, the risk of bottle variation increases, and I’m not sure that can be fairly attributed to the estate.

I’ve been favorably impressed with the ‘88, possibly because of low expectations and possibly for sentimental purposes. Your note seems spot on.

Re: Old Burgundy Dinner
Nice report on some terrific wines.
The one ive actually had is the 1988 Salon. We drank a lot of that for anniversary celebrations over the years. Probably 5+ years since we finished our stash. Salon is one of my favorite Champagnes, but I haven’t bought any since the 2006. Just too expensive.

Nothing crazy about 2014 Latour IMO Jim.

I'm set on '19 Montrose. It was ~$125 from Macarthurs as a future.
If I could figure out where the '16 Haut Brion is, and if they'd hold them for pickup in the summer, I might pull the trigger. I'll call them Monday. Do they usually know what's in stock in which stote if you call?
