Re: Serious great wines from the holidays (Calon, Louise, Clape)
Great notes as usual Nic, I was never a fan of Cuvée Louise, my fault entirely. The one time I splurged and bought one I got apple cider and oxidation while everyone (experienced tasters like John Gilman, Dale, Musigny) around said this was a feature not a bug. I decided right there to stop buying ...

Hahaha...looking for some more 04 L.Barton too! Some lovely wines in this vintage. Not sure if I am much of a big fan of vintages with 'power'...they do not seem to shed that power to reveal that classicism quality I desire.

Re: What’s your 89 Lynch Bages?
I wonder if anyone really answered the question, though. What is your '89 Lynch? To me, the question isn't what's the greatest wine you've had, or want to have. What wine out there are you emotionally connected to? And it might not necessarily be a Mouton or a DRC. Maybe it's a '79 Giscours.... Or ...

Re: What’s your 89 Lynch Bages?
Good points, Marcus. My last PLL was the 2003, notably good for the vintage— though I did get a minuscule pour of the 16 at the UGC. I am a big fan of the 2000-2003 PLLs though. But by all accounts, PLL probably did lose the thread thereafter when May-Elaine de Lencquesaing sold the estate in 2003....

Re: Thoughts on the 2000 Montrose? Anyone had it?
I found the William Kelley reference Marcus made and I quote more of it here: “After 2000, Montrose has been fermented in stainless steel rather than wood, and concerted efforts seem to have been made in the cellar to tame the estate’s animal side: the 2005 is as great as the 2000, but noticeably m...

Re: Thoughts on the 2000 Montrose? Anyone had it?
William Kelley has said this was the last of the more rustic and old school vintages for Montrose - it was the last before wooden fermenting vats were replaced with stainless steel tanks - but I didn’t find it rustic at all. It had a lot of Cabernet snap and tension to it but I found it very elegan...

I've been doing some heavy fasting in the past two months, with the exception of the recent BWE festivities in DC. All evidence is that the great American democratic experiment is coming to a screeching end at about midnight on Tuesday, as the crazies assume power. It looks like it is going to be e...

Re: 1985 Leoville Las Cases and 2000 d’Issan
I’ve mentioned this one before but it’s been a while: the best “off vintage” claret I’ve had, by far, was the terrific 1992 Talbot. It was being dumped in the mid-90’s for like $8 a pop, so my dad grabbed 3 cases and walked around with a big grin repeating “it’s Grand Cru!”. We drank reams of the s...

I've never understood the angst about the "new" Pavie. I think it is a brilliant wine and, despite predictions to the contrary, the 1998s and 2000s have continued to perform brilliantly with age on them. The 1998 was not made with Michel Rolland. It is not a bad wine. As Jim, you would pr...
