Very nice, indeed. I had a glass of the 89 Latour the other day. While I thoroughly enjoyed it, I'll bet it didn't measure up to the 88s.

Re: Demand for 2010 Bordeaux
To a great extent I agree with Pomilion. Gilman is doing himself and the wine world a disservice because of his exaggerated claims. And that's too bad because in the long run both the wine world and his career/reputation would benefit from a more measured approach. I get that he likes a more acidic s...

Re: Demand for 2010 Bordeaux
Yup, we're talking about the 2009 H-B. I've got the mag right in front of me, Art; Nov 2012 issue. It reviews, in its own words, Medoc crus classes 2009. That 17.5 score must be a barrel sample since it dates from 2010: http://www.decanter.com/wine/reviews/chateau-haut-batailley-grand-cru-classe-pau...

Re: Demand for 2010 Bordeaux
That''s quite a range of scores for the Haut Batailley listed on the Farr page. The panel for this particular tasting at Decanter included Stephen Brook (he gave it a 19), Alun Griffiths MW (19), and Steven Spurrier (18.5). Several things strike me. The Decanter team tasted blind, and apart from one...

Re: Demand for 2010 Bordeaux
Just checked, Decanter it is. In a blind tasting of 09s, GPL and Haut-Batailley were both rated at 18.75 or 95+. There's a decimal because it's the average of the three reviewers scores. Fortunately individual scores are supplied, but as you can imagine, all 3 gave high scores. Not bad for three tas...

I've read more than one review of DomChev over the years that claims to detect a bit of pine in it. Also things like smoke, graphite, cedar, leather, tobacco, tea, gravel, menthol, etc. And while certain fruits are also mentioned, rarely is it described as confected or fruit forward. Think I just ta...

Re: Demand for 2010 Bordeaux
According to something I read somewhere (sorry about the lack of precision), the real deal of 09 might be the Haut Batailley. According to what I read (I think Decanter, but not entirely sure) it is supposed to be just a hair short of the GPL in 09. Anyone try it? I don't normally buy it, but if it'...

Re: Demand for 2010 Bordeaux
Gilman is an odd duff, that is for sure. He gave the 09 cos d'estournel a 67, while everyone else fawned over it. Is 67 a stunt score? On the other hand, in the WFW article he gives the 2010 vintage a 17+, which puts him right up there with everyone else. Hard to know what he's up to sometimes. Alth...

It was a difficult choice, but I went with Margaux because of the nose, the berries, the feminine mystique, the je ne sais quoi. Sure there's more variability here than in Pauillac, but I don't have to drink the poor ones do I? If in the end you guys want to cuddle up with Rambo, be my guest. If I'v...

Re: Poll: In general, is Bordeaux under $30 worth buying?
I don't understand pitting one wine region against another, whether it be Bdx vs. Cali cabs, or as is common on some other boards, Bdx vs Burgundy. In my experience they don't taste the same. If you drink Burgundy drink it because you like it, not because you perceive it to be a better value than Bd...

Re: Poll: In general, is Bordeaux under $30 worth buying?
I don't buy a lot in that price range; mostly the next one up. That said, I'm not at all opposed to finding a great sub-$30 wine. So let me ask, has anyone tried the 2005 Clos Puy Arnaud? And now that I think about it, maybe someone should put Alice Feiring onto it. I understand they're green, or or...

Re: Has Bordeaux become Boring
Except, Stefan, Alice Feiring thinks most Bdx these days ARE fruit bombs, which is one of the reasons that for her they're boring. She wants terrior and is of the opinion that Bdx has essentially given up on such values in pursuit of big fruit flavours and lots of oak.

I have a mixed opinion of this wine. Dark blackish red colour. The nose is tight, at least initially. Breathing deep gives some bramble, cassis, but also something a little volatile underneath it all (admittedly you have to breath deep for this). On the palate it's just a bit on the international si...
