TN Figeac 1998

This is arguably the fines Figeac made by Eric d’Aramon, loved it en primeur, and had my last bottle a couple of years ago. The extra few years in bottle has only made it a deeper more profound wine. Decanted for around two hours, and paired with the brilliant Flannery hanger steaks (not aged). The ...

Re: Finally: 2014 VCC Versus 2014 La Conseillante.

I think the makeup of this board tends to go for more traditional styles of Bordeaux. For us it is not only a better vintage, but a great value. Most critics disagree. I have no idea about the normal Bordeaux drinker, but as the prices in the secondary market are holding steady, I doubt whether they...

Re: Finally: 2014 VCC Versus 2014 La Conseillante.

I bought several cases of the 2014 VCC and every so often (about once every couple of months) drink a bottle. A few months ago, I became a little concerned as one of them had closed up, but at a vertical of VCC, when it showed beautifully, I realized it might have been an off bottle. Since then, I h...

Re: UGC visits Singapore - 2020 vintage.

Mark, Thank you for the notes. Your comparison to 2009 worries me, as even at the initial primeur tastings, they were pretty enough, but lacked any real precision. A few exceptions of course, but in general I was less enthusiastic coming home than the hype would have suggested. We did taste a few bo...

This was a gift from a friend and the second bottle I tasted from a case that was bought as a future. Wonderful tasting notes; thanks for sharing. Interesting that the Las Cases shone in a less ripe year. I am not a fan generally in top vintages, where I normally find it where it is part of a horizontal tasting. But get a lesser year, it seems to find its balance. As you know I love 2014 VCC, and aft...

I saw the Galloni piece, and have tasted the wine. He is seems a bit of an outlier among his peers. Not a fan of his palate, but I am glad I have tasted it, to make up my own mind.

It is very good, but perhaps not on the same level as the 2001.

Re: Report on 2022 vintage and tasting notes from Jane Anson is out

This is not a vintage to buy based on scores. From everything written, and anecdotal conversations with friends in the business, it is a year of extremes, and if I were buying in quantity, I would really want to taste the wines. I am a little skeptical that the wines can be that fresh, based on wine...

There is a sort of completeness buying a wine in barrel, and opening it twenty years later. For some reason, it is more yours than if you bought it in the store. A friend who buys a lot of futures compared it to being a child’s godfather than just a family friend.

I have never liked the vintage as a whole. It got good press after four pretty dismal vintages, but the only wine I thought was worth buying was the Haut Brion. I made up for it by going much more heavily into 1996 Medoc.

Haut Brion 1995 paired with the finest lamb I have tasted.

Perhaps the best is the simplest. The 1995 Haut Brion was the wine of the vintage for me. I tasted it en primeur, bought a case, and this is my seventh bottle. It has taken on all the brilliance of mature Haut Brion, and is probably at its apogee. Leather, brick dust, a touch of iron, autumnal leaf ...

What surprised me was the 87 point score and the “yuk” descriptor. I tend to score “yuks” in the seventies, and this sounds like a fair place to start. I did not like the wine enough when I tasted it en primeur enough to bother to score it. Jim, God (well Parker) gave you a 50-100 point scale; you s...

Need a ruling on this.
Last week, we donated a bottle of Taittinger ComtesRose 2007 to a local charity, with a $125 minimum.
I misjudged the denizens of Chappaqua, as there were no bids, so we paid $125 to get our bottle back. Does this contravene the freeze?

Not hearing too much about the vintage. Echoing William Kelley, a friend who just come back said it was heterogenous, and he compared it to a fresher version of 2018. He felt the Montrose was clearly the best wine, but he only tasted two FGs Mouton and Margaux
