No way, you’re still good, Marcus: the 1989 Lynch Bages — the greatest wine known to humanity — has a permanent buying freeze exemption. It’s number is retired.

What about Rollandized chateau? Are their pre-Michel era wines automatically exemption eligible?
And now defunct chateau, like Magdelaine and La Tour Haut Brion, these of course have a standing exemption, I assume.

Being an existing wine club member clearly qualifies as an exemption, Stefan. Excellent, Stefan is in! On the 2023 freeze, I'm feeling strong! I had planned on holding off through the summer myself, I'm really not seeing much "must have" out there. Yeah, that’s my feeling too. Plus shippi...

The BWE Spring 2023 Great Wine Buying Freeze Contest (a la Seinfeld): who can hold out the longest? Mark’s recent mention of a buying freeze “until September” caught my attention, seems like a worthy, if challenging, goal. Better yet, why not share in this effort and even compare notes in the proces...

ut i'm kind of resigned to go to Hell, drinking Rolland wines for Eternity... What is going on with this transphobia out there, it seems like fascism is alive and well in this country. I really wish the "Republican Party" <rolls eyes> would just die and go away. Man, they are dying hard, though, with their autocratic tactics. They will die, though, I predict it. I'...

My style is more aligned with Ed's, as we prefer to walk and explore on our own as much as possible and use a guidebook for the extra details we would miss otherwise. But for sure, advance bookings and reservations for basically everything are highly advisable. I looked up one of the mind-blowing ge...

Re: Rome visit help
Been to Rome once in 2010 and I loved it, totally loved it. All of the main sights are well worth it — the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the Vatican, etc. If the weather cooperates, Rome is small enough to walk everywhere especially if your hotel is fairly central. The one t...

In an ideal cellar world, I’d store my fully mature wines (‘88 and older, some ‘89s & ‘90s) at 50F, the 95-05s at 55F, and the younger stuff at 60F.

+2 with Jacques, except climate change is already here, already wreaking ecological, economic, and societal damage. And worse is coming fast/soon. So far, virtually every forecast to date on how climate change will play out has been too optimistic, eg rates of warming have been much closer to the wo...

Re: All things off vintage
One of the most enthralling, magical, beguiling, complex, ethereal bouquets I've ever put my nose to was the 1973 Mouton (circa 2008). The palate couldn't remotely match the bouquet and the whole thing fell apart right before our eyes (and noses and mouths) after about 30-40 minutes of air, but it w...

Re: Figeac vertical tasting - do I join the Rolland haters?
William Kelley is earning some real cred in my book with his recent commentary on Berserkers, distinguishing himself from other critics at least in principle. That said, his scores on the 19-21 vintages are virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the “rock star” wine commentariat, so it’s hard ...

I found the 20 Figeac pretty hohum at the UGC. I tasted it 4-5 times over the evening and couldn’t understand what the fuss was about (but I liked it more than the 20 Canon).

I was all pumped up about that, then I read that the Florida-of-the-North has elected a Republican super majority in the state senate that allows them to impeach the governor, state Supreme Court judges, dog catchers. That state is crazier than Florida. Yeah, and that gerrymand played a big part in...

Surprisingly large victory for the liberal judge in Wisconsin. Not sure if it means anything lasting about national politics, but the pundits sure want to ascribe it to how overturning Roe has upended political dynamics in swing states. I do know how insanely gerrymandered Wisconsin is, even by toda...

Re: Which post-1990 vintage is closest to full maturity?
Maybe the best answer is, none of the above. There are outlier vintages like 2003 we might agree are better consumed sooner than later, but for everyone with palates like me, it’s really a holding pattern and hope the 01s and 02s hurry up. But someone like AlexR should have a very different perspect...

Which post-1990 vintage is closest to full maturity? We had so many wonderfully mature wines at the convention in London, it has me thinking yet again about which of the many bottles in my cellar are close to similar peak drinking. Everything we had at the convention post-1990 still seems like it ne...
