Re: Quick notes on some recent wines...

Give me 1990 GPL anytime over 2003. ooh, boy, I distinctly remember you praising a 2003 GPL you had with Alex, Nicola, I remember it because I thought that wine was crap. Personally, I think 2003 wines, left and right bank, have been consistently very delicious. And i think we have historically see...

I had a few bottles of Clos des Lambrays back in the day when it was like $25 per bottle, it has now gotten a little pricey for my budget.

Thanks for the summary GBF, Meyney really seems like a property that has its act together.
I’m picking up my case of 2016 Meyney in the coming week.

You’re preaching to the choir on 2003 Bordeaux.
I’ve rarely had a disappointing 2003, from either bank of the river.
I had some Clos des Lambrays back in the day when they were like $25 per bottle, they are a little out of my range now.

I’m telling you, 2014 left bank is special.
Just a couple anecdotal scores I saw from Neil Martin have me wondering a little.
For example, he has the 2015 Leoville Barton as being better than the ‘16.

Exactly. I'm telling you, 2014 northern Medoc is one of the great Bordeaux vntages of the past 20 years, especially when you factor in price.

I bought a case of 2016 Meyney in stock at Zachys, but I think the consensus is that 2014 is better.
How can that be if 2016 is supposed to be so extraordinary?
I looked at whats-his-name's scores of the 2016s in the Advocate, they don't seem so awesome to me.
Is 2016 overrated?

I started drinking Bordeaux wine in the late 1990s. I remember drinking those "young" Bordeauxs then like 1989 Lynch, 1986 Gruaud Larose, 1988 LLC, etc. Those wines at age 10-15 tasted different than the wines I drink today that are 10-15 years old. They were better, with more complexity. ...

With the holidays upon us, it is time to start thinking about the BWE wine of the year. And what a year it has been! Past winners: 2000: 1996 Sociando-Mallet 2001: 1989 Lynch-Bages 2002: 1995 d'Yquem 2003: 1999 Haut Brion Blanc 2004: 2000 Pichon Baron and 2000 du Tertre 2005: 2000 Margaux 2006: 2003...

2015 Produttori del Barbaresco

Gerry, i bought a few bottles of this on your recommendation and really liked the one I tried, nicely ripe but balanced and smooth for such a young Italian wine.
I don't know much about Barbaresco, can you tell me more about this wine and what else I should be looking for?

Clearly the wine changes over time. It will eventually be over the hill. But you’d still rate it 95 after it’s faded? Yes David. That is indeed what I mean. And I think that's what Robert Parker means as well. That's the whole idea behind rating wines in their infancy. If in April 2006 Robert Parke...

GPD is like not even supermarket level wine.
It belongs in the local convenience store with Boones Farm and Blue Nun.
At least GPL would be good with like pizza or Thai food if it were available in the $12-15 price range.

I can't argue with him. But a rating of 95? It is like this wine is better now that it will ever be later. Like Robert Parker, Nicola, I rate a wine with the assumption that it is going to evolve with age. Therefore, I don't give a wine a score of, say, 93 points, with the assumption that it will &q...

Maybe a point or two high out of enthusiasm, Nicola, but it is a really nice wine. Very legitimate stuff, there is nothing fly-by-night here.
I wonder what Jeff Leve rates it, he likes this estate.
I’ll let my case of 2016 Tour St. Christophe sit there for about 8 years.
