very interesting take, I assume you have tasted many '02L to make that determination.
I have to say I love '01 especially pessac leognan.

Not much experience with '02.
'02 Yon Figeac-eh
I have had the 02' pichon lalande, very tight but very good
on the other hand I still long for that bottle of '02 Palmer Alter Ego, absolute beauty.

Though good, I'm not sold on the Durfort since a less expensive '04 alter ego destroyed it.

On another note the '01 bahan haut brion is another beauty, all the pessac terrior wrapped in a soft elegant bow. Like the '01 SHL I scored this wine 93 points. Pessac is quickly becoming one of my favorite appellations, it fits my palate perfectly.

Re: TN: 1998 Château Smith Haut Lafitte (France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan)

Never tasted the '98 but '01 for me knocked it out of the park. I recently tasted the '05, a nice wine, but the '01 is more complex with better nice balance. '05 is large, more coffee notes than the '01. Though the '01 is just loaded with that pessac terroir.

2006 Beaulieu Comtes de tastes

A nice aroma of truffle and stable funk. The palate is dusty dried cherries, dirt, chalk, leather galore with a nice balance. This is absolutely solid bordeaux.

2005 Vieux Côtes de Castillon Cuvée Johanna

Musk, leathery notes, dried cherries, hints of allspice and smokey sweetness on the nose On the palate, earth, asparagus, tart cherry, leathery components are balanced but lead to a short dry mildly astringent finish. 88 points. My third bottle of this, different scores everytime with the highest re...

drink it young and then move to the '05 Vieux Château Champs de Mars Côtes de Castillon Cuvée Johanna, a good ager and to me the superior wine for the same price.

Jim

2004 Lagrange for $39 here. Any good?
other notables
04' Pontet at $49
04' Ducru at $75

I've had some decent luck with this vintage.

Any thoughts on these wines?

02' and 04' Alter Ego, seduced would be an understatement.
05' Carbonnieux, tasted this at the local premier of bottle shock, I could not stopping filling my glass.

Re: 04 Kay Bros Amery Vinyards Hillside Shiraz has been uncorked

I have a few bottles of the 04' block six. I know many have their reservations of how Oz shiraz ages and rightfully so. I must say I think this wine can age. In no way did it feel flabby and over the top. It's big, no doubt, serious foundation with a tidal wave of blackberry slate. I have two bottle...

I am going to sign up for their list just because of this post. Krankel's articulation, wit and perspective on wine is extremely refreshing and I like it. I've never been blessed thus far to drink any Sine Qua Non, but here's to the future.
