Re: Blighty cellar raid - Montrose '82 and others

Nice wines, Ian. The biggest surprise is how good the Lamarche La Grand Rue was. The second biggest surprise is that none of the white Burgundies suffered from premox.

Which '89, Jim? Françoise is rather fond of the 1889 but I am not sure that he has the 1789. He bought the 1989 on your recommendation but very likely has not tasted this youngster.

Yes, that was a wonderful lunch. Jean-Michel was late because of a meeting that came up at the last minute and said that he could only drop by for a couple of minutes, but, as David said, he enjoyed our group so much that his son had trouble getting him to go back to work. Hendrikus, are you new to ...

No Lagrange at all, David? You should have listened to Setab when he extolled the virtues of this underrated estate. At that time I had no Lagrange; now I have cases of '96, 2000, '02, and '03. I still buy the wonderful 1990 when the price dips below $90.

The Pontet Canet is now sold out. stefanJr told me that he got in an order for 5 on the web but does not have confirmation that he scored. In my experience, that means he does not have them. :(

I find it very hard to drink young Bordeaux. Young Burgundy, on the other hand, can be very attractive. Every '05 Bdx I have tried forces me to clean my tongue between swallows, but the few '05 Burgs I've drunk have been delightful.

We drank the 1992 regular Dalla Valle a short time back. I was quite good and interesting with Eucalyptus and mint that was nicely balanced with cassis and dark berries. I had the impression that I would not have liked the wine if I had drunk it 8 or 10 years ago.

Lucie and I drank a very nice '03 Eddie Feraud CdP the other night with Ratatouille on Polenta. I remarked to her at the time, and she agreed, that the secret to liking CdP is not to drink it very often. I am referring, of course, to basic CdP, not the wines you drink, Harry. Some Grenache based win...

Jim, you like 2005 Burgs; I like 1995. Tonight Lucie and I drank a tasty '95 Jadot Beaune Bressandes 1er Cru. I think I paid $40 for it last year. What a lovely little wine! Sweet fruit, good balance. It doesn't have the complexity of the major Burgs, but it goes down really easily.
