Two disappointments: 1998 Pape & 2004 Selbach-Oster Spatlese

I have now drunk 7 bottles of the 1998 Pape Clement out of my case and I would say 5-6 of them have been underwhelming. Maybe there was some damage somewhere along the way but it just seems like a thin effort that comes up short, nothing compelling. the nose is nice though. The 2004 Selbach Oster Ze...

1996 will always have a place in my heart although I'll agree with Marcs about that wild and wonderful 2000, which I place a notch above the 2003.

Indeed, David, those wines were a real treat.

Just ordered six bottles of 2014 Coutet from MacArthurs for $37 each, I think they have about six left.

Here are the critics notes on 2014 Coutet: Wine Advocate: 93-95+ Points, Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: ""The Château Coutet 2014 is a blend of 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle and delivers...cue the drumroll...a whopping 162 grams per liter of residual suga...

Re: Winona Chief and Marjorie arrive at BWE Mecca in Maine.

We kept going back and forth over six hours, Ian. They both had splendid perfumes. The l'Evangile may have been ever so slightly more evolved, but that's nitpicking. If I had to pick one with a gun to my head I'd probably go with the VCC. I know you had the VCC recently. I just don't get to drink wi...

Re: Winona Chief and Marjorie arrive at BWE Mecca in Maine.

It was amazing how well every one of the wines performed. The BWEers arrived about 4pm, we uncorked the '96 Dom out on the back deck with cheese and nuts, as Chris said the champagne was in just a perfect place. Really a different level from the very youthful Doms that I usually drink when I drink D...

Winona Chief and Marjorie arrive at BWE Mecca in Maine.

We had a splendid evening in Maine tonight at the JimHow estate, drinking: 1996 Dom Perignon 1998 L'Evangile 2001 Prum Spatlese 1998 Vieux Chateau Certan 2014 Coutet 1989 Lynch Bages (from half bottle, with whoopie pie) Everything was spectacular, a beautiful evening on the back deck, the wines were...

I'll have to check my schedule Ian, I'm a prisoner of my criminal trial schedule and this local municipal campaign in which I'm involved.
The fares are certainly priced right, $494 on British Airways Logan to Heathrow from Oct. 4-10.

No, but it was definitely Gruaud-Larose-like. I liked it, I think it is going to be a 92-93 point wine with a little age under its belt.
Which leads to the existential question. Is a wine either a 92 point wine or not a 92 point wine, despite its age?

Yeah, not real exciting. I literally think I'll fill my cellar only with Bordeaux from here on out. Why? Because, after all these years, I remain... a Bordeaux Wine Enthusiast. Whatever I paid for this wine, I could get a Bordeaux counterpart at the same price of much higher quality. I'll give this ...

True. An interesting wine. Extremely young, obviously. The oak calmed down after the small first glass. It was a beauty for most of the bottle, the big question is whether it may have faded a bit towards the end. I don't know. Overall, it seems to have been a healthy, modern Gruaud Larose. But a lit...

I say the answer to the question is: YES. We lost a whole god damned generation of great Bordeaux because of the "Robert Parker Phenomenon." I say, the Robert Parker Drama. Bordeaux has been around for a millennium. Robert Parker has been around for a blink of an eye. I say, that we have b...

Did we lose a generation of great Bordeaux because of RMP?

Ian's notes on the 2016 vintage are awesome. I haven't been this excited about a vintage since reading HWSRN's notes on the 1996 vintage. The first question is: Has Bordeaux wine-making changed in the past three or four years since Robert Parker retired? And secondly, when we see the quality being p...
