Re: President Trump

I see it a bit differently. I agree that California should not dictate how Maine catches lobsters. But what we have today is precisely the opposite: voters in small states directing what happens in big states.

Re: 2014 Chateau Margaux at $339... Yes? or No?

David, not sure what you mean about the 88 Yquem. It isn't much more expensive today than it was 20 years ago, perhaps 50% increase in price, which in the world of wine is negligible.

I still think that Sauternes is the value buy of Bordeaux.

Thanks Ian, indeed! That was quite a weekend (although it was at the end of the month so a little less than two years). Thankfully it wasn't this year, that would have been a disaster! I was just thinking how much better it is to share great wines with people that enjoy them. Looking forward to more...

Re: 2014 Chateau Margaux at $339... Yes? or No?

It is interesting the difference between being a spectator on the sidelines or being faced with the same dilemma. I was just given a gift to purchase a bottle of wine up to $500 locally. And the first thing that came to mind is that I would totally go for that 2014 Margaux that Jim was contemplating...

Re: 2014 Chateau Margaux at $339... Yes? or No?

Would you buy an 89 Lynch Bages at this price? Would the 2014 Margaux give you more pleasure than an 89 Lynch Bages.

If you can answer those questions, you probably have your answer. :)

Re: President Trump

As far as the speech, putting aside my loathing of Trump, I found it to be boring and not very well structured. It was more disciplined than his normal speeches, out of necessity, and it certainly hit on some themes that will appeal to his base. He was able to attack Biden and give himself credit wi...

I prefer that Democrats take Jim's stance and predict a Trump win, if nothing else than to motivate people to get to the polls. The last thing we need is an assumption that Biden is too far ahead (although given 2016, I don't think anyone assumes that anymore). I thought Biden killed it at his speec...

PA's politics has never been solid blue. I lived there probably longer than anyplace, and much of my family is still there. The Democrats that won statewide tended to be moderate (Gov. Re: Champagne producers facing sales collapse

Whereas still wine has quite a bit of inventory in the US, I suspect that NV Champagne was more of a just-in-time business. Which means that the 25% Trump tariff is probably killing their US business. I look at Champagne prices in the US right now, and they are pretty high. Combine that with the eff...

I wish I had more pics from BWE NY 2003. I think I posted everything I had.

The 12 Angry Men never went away. The main group is still getting together and still acting with the same frat-boy mentality. It really degrades wine, imo. It is the exact opposite of BWE.

The other psychological aspect of auctions is pre-auction estimates. During the last auction I participated in, I let a couple of deals go because the pre-auction estimates were so low compared to the value of the wines. Well that and I felt that my competitor would have gone quite a bit higher. Non...

One of the interesting comments Thomas made was that many of the chateaux in the Medoc tend to put the Cab Sauv grapes in the best place and relegate the Merlot to lesser soils. Palmer made an effort to elevate Merlot on the left bank and had it planted in some of the better plots, and as such they ...
