Tonight, a very Red Burgundy like rose Champagne, 2012 Bertrand Delespierre Saignee des Terres Amoureuses with soft shell crabs and blackened crispy skin salmon. The seafood was takeout from a restaurant a few blocks from our house. Very happy with the food and the Champagne.

My last bottle of 1982 Leoville Barton had a very leaky cork - fill was about 1.5 inches below the bottle’s shoulder - smelled like Madeira. Didn’t drink any.

Generally very good experiences with 1982 Canon.

Couple days ago, 2011 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese was a little too sweet and a little short on acidity (for my taste) - a bit disappointing considering its status. Tonight, going with nv Laurent-Perrier Rose. Easy drinking and very pleasant Champagne.

I finished off all of my 1998 Faugeres (about a dozen half bottles) some years ago. I thought they drank well young - nice fruit but not very complex. Well worth the $8 that I paid for each 375.

More German Riesling recently: 2012 Von Schubert Maximin Grunhaus Abtsberg Spatlese (this was another Wow wine) and 2011 Von Hovel Oberemmeler Hutte Spatlese (very nice and fruity but not as intense as the Abtsberg). Both 8.5% alcohol.

We had another 375 of the 2012 La Fleur de Bouard a couple nights ago. A nice, moderately rich, uncomplicated very merlot wine. Got a whole bunch of these for cheap a few years ago when MacArthur was remodeling the store - everything on the floor was 20% off.

I’m a big fan of that 2009 Chevillon Vaucrains - just delicious, great fruit but not over the top. May have a bottle or two left. Getting pretty pricey these days, I think current releases of this are around $150 in the US.

Tonight (based on a recent very positive tasting note from Salil on CellarTracker) we opened 2001 JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese. Definitely a Wow wine with 8% alcohol. Been on a German Riesling kick for a while now and really enjoying it.

Tonight we each had a nice big glass of Dr. Thanisch (Erben-Thanisch) 2015 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Kabinett. This is very good stuff - light and a little sweet with zinging acidity. Great fruit and only 8% alcohol.

Also really liked the label on the 1970 Mouton but the wine was wildly inconsistent. Lots of great Mouton labels. Have to say my favorite is Giscours with the topless mermaid.

Tonight we had fettuccine with our tomato sauce, Italian sausages (chicken) and Parmigiano-Reggiano. The 2010 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco Rabaja that we drank with our dinner was wonderful. Really great stuff and surprisingly in a good place for drinking now.

I’m also a fan of the Thivin Brouilly. There are many pretty good Beaujolais in the $15 to $25 price range but not willing to buy anything much above that. Not a fan of Beaujolais Nouveau.

The Anrecht was labeled Spatlese. Had some sweetness but wasn’t too sweet and was nicely balanced with acidity - in a good place right now.

Last wine we opened was a 2010 Selbach-Oster Graacher Himmelreich Anhrecht. This is a very good German Riesling. Last night, Marjorie and I split a bomber of aged Avery Raspberry Sour (2016 release).

I remember that 1979 Haut Bailly - very nice. There were many very good 1979 Bordeaux. Some others I really liked: Giscours, Cantemerle, Palmer, Pichon Lalande, Margaux and lots of Pomerol.

Bordeaux isn’t where I look for red wine in the $12 to $20 price range. There are some top quality Cote du Rhône for less than $20 and some very good Montepulciano for less than $15.
