How do people obtain Ygrec? Is it for chateau visitors, or some other process (reward for distributors etc.)? Are those the same 1990 Rauzan Segla's you poured for us a few years ago in Napa? That was a lovely example.

wow. I think I have a magnum of the 2010 to denote the kids arrival, but doubt I have any other years nowadays.
I think this is one of these wines where they must have started estate bottling approx 1990 or so; never really hear of old vintages.

It seems like the US market is more fond of Gloria than Saint Pierre, even when the latter is classified, and perhaps more of an 'estate' wine.

Re: Under $40 (US) bordeaux that's still classic?
Among the Libournaisse, try Grand Corbin Despagne and Larmande . In Pomerol I might suggest Bonalgue , but that can be hard to find, given only a couple thousand cases are made, and the Benelux seems to get a good portion. MacArthurs/Bassins used to be one of the few merchants who could source the l...

2022 futures? Really? Does anyone (outside of the business, naturally) still care? We are all sheep. I know the wine press constantly beats the futures drum, but that’s just because they are part (bought snd sold) of the idiot-loop industry. We should spend a whole year on BWE only talking about re...

By pure coincidence, I had a couple glasses of the 2013 Provenance CS [Rutherford] last night. Beckstoffer Georges III grapes, super ripe/full throttle Napa that hit 15.2% abv. Somewhat newer producer with management that came from Duckhorn I think, and owned by a private family. It didn't taste hot...

I thought I read/heard somewhere that the old Martinelli 'Jackass Hill' Zins were able to hit 17% abv naturally, although not sure what kind of yeasts can keep working at that concentration. I've only tried it once, but they were crazy potent/full throttle/powerful.

Sacramento offline - Sat June 10
I'm thinking of pulling together some kind of offline for Saturday June 10, at our place in Sacramento. Maybe mixed grill, small plates, cheeses etc. It's certainly time to get the grill cleaned up, as well as the outdoor areas. Open casting call for wines that will intrigue and/or delight. Any inte...

I think the title of this thread should be amended to include the addendum of "....different wines in different sizes than what I paid for". I'm not impressed by a vendor who switches out a prepaid rarity, in a special format, for a widely (Costco!) available wine (no matter how good it is...

Re: Wally's 2019 Finally Delivered
That's the whole scam of futures, if the wines drop in price you'll get everything. And if they garnered 100 pts or what not, then it's a whole bunch of heartache chasing them. Look at the Sherry Lehman thread on WB, so it's not just dodgy retailers (like Premier Cru, Rare LLC, Carolina etc.) that a...

When I was 13 years old and my voice was cracking as I was emerging into the strapping adult that I am today, my parents bought my two younger brothers and I a tape recorder for Christmas. Hosanna could be a hard wine to find, but it's hard to have any sympathy for Wally's not procuring the other wines in the market place. Yes, it will cost (and hurt) them. But that's a very full priced retailer, and should be accountable. I've never had issues with them, but I don't think I've ordere...

Cardinale is sort of this, from within the the Jess Jackson empire.
It's pretty darn good, but has become - like all Napa flagships - very costly.

My life observation is that the big regulated US financial services providers (SIFIs) are predictable and tend to follow their own policies closely. One doesn't see strange cowboy behavior, especially as institutions get larger. Smaller sized financials, and foreign ones, do more strange stuff. Most...

Re: Figeac vertical tasting - do I join the Rolland haters?
For me, one way to think about 'precise' is comparable to using spices in cooking. To wit, some recipes call for each contributing flavor to be added whole to the recipe - a bay leaf, pepper corns, a stick of cinnamon, whole garlic and so on. Other recipes work better when everything is toasted/grou...

Re: What will happen to Bordeaux if the banks go under?
I think I'm personally ok with the cost of capital getting normalized a little, i.e. finding its true market market clearing level rather than a manipulated interest rate. That might mean estates/trade who have been sitting on vast piles of Bordeaux assuming it's an iron law of physics that prices m...

I think we lump too many years into the category of 'off vintage'; it seems to have encompassed the non drinkable (years where some estate won't release grand vin) to the lighter years, to the merely non collector/investment grade.

Interesting notes and thanks for sharing. It seems like its always a little harder to get (communal) verticals organized for right bank estates, unless there is someone playing anchorman who can fill in years from their own racks.
