Re: Cellar temperature?

A good friend of mine has a cellar that reaches up to 68-70F in the summertime. Tasted wines from it over the last decade and they're as fresh as expected. I guess the origanl question was if you like 'em young, style-wise.

Re: Is Pontet Canet overrated?

Good question. Was at the property in 2007 and had a great chat with JM Comme, the winemaker. He is Mr. Biodynamic Plus himself. He was looking for Mouton quality for Mouton prices. That was when I knew I would part from Pontet-Canet. Jeff calls the 2003 "good, not great". I think that's t...

And for y'all worried about Trump and America, you should really be more worried about the EU and the mess with Greece. That hasn't played out yet and is a lot more dangerous than Trump spouting off. I think I had 16-18 bottles of 2003 Lagrange so far. Liked it more than Comte, but I've also noticed the unbalance, mostly because of the toasted oak. Other vintages were better.

Hi Alex, it was the lack of length on behalf of the Tronquoy that made the slight difference. It is a dark, serieus wine. The Lilian was more 'agile', elegant. Both were very fine and I can imagine the 2003 Mouton to be a real treat! :)

Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac 5eme GCC 2003 : The last vintage before prices went skyrocketing high and out of my reach. Before amphoras and horses. I don't care, this is a stunner. Bas-Médoc is the 'weakest' of left bank appellations, with sandy/clay soil and mostly merlot. I find the wines in general good to drink with lots of fruit, earth, freshness and authenticity. Never a complex or hedonistic experience in my book, though.

1) 2010 - Ripe crunchyness. Beauties. Patience needed. 2) 2009 - Smooth, sexy, hedonistic wines. Don't think they won't last long(er) though. 3) 2008 - Surprise! Love the style, which seems a softer, easier combination of 09 and 10. 2007 isn't bad at all. Sometimes a touch too much acidity / balsami...

GPL can't compete with Pontet, but Jim compared Lynch Bages to GPL, so it's a different comparison. I consider GPL to be much better than Lynch B is I look at recent reports. GPL 2009 may be sweet, as I found many 2009's to be sweet. That's why I prefer 2010 as a vintage. Still, the hedonistic and n...

GPL does incredible in the best years. It's tradition since decades. Must say the 2000 Lynch-Bages I once had was a great promise (too young), never had more recent work. Last Filhot I had was the 1935, which was a beautiful, bone-dry experience. I guess that Filhot still is in the 2nd league in various vintages because no 2nd wine is made. A 'Crème de...' is nice, but that should always be the level of a 1st wine. OTOH, the lighter style of the property sometimes is...
