The cellars or the winemaking areas, Alex? A lot of houses have ancient cellars filled with mold, etc. where the old stuff is resting.

Re: Two wines, one winner

I find a lot of complexity in the 1989 Angelus. Ive had it many times but never alongside a Figeac. The two are very different styles and different palates will have different preferences, but I wouldn't call the '89 Angelus simple or lacking complexity.

Ahh, my beloved Angelus, where have you gone? This wine was sooooo good in 1989 and 1990. I fell in love with it and keep hoping to see them repeat that. But perhaps it is not meant to be.

Re: New York Times article in defense of Bordeaux blanc

I can't comment from personal experience on premox in white Bdx because I don't drink much of it. But it's not just Burgs that are at risk. I've seen it in white Rhones. And if Stuart says he's seen it in Bordeaux Blanc, I believe it's happening. I wonder if there's a greater risk with wines that ma...

Yes, I did say I was buying, not necessarily receiving too much. Though they eventually came through on every single bottle, I am done buying pre-arrivals from PC. OTOH, I don't know if I would have been able to resist the 2002 PR Winston Churchill at a pre-arrival price of $150...

Rob, I've been the lucky recipient of a few glasses of 1990 Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs thanks to your generos...

2002 Pol Roger question

I'm looking to add some 2002 Pol Roger to the cellar, and am considering the "regular" vintage blend and some of the Blanc de Blancs. I know we have a few Pol Roger fans on board. How would you compare them? And is there any difference between the 2002 Blanc de Blancs and the 2002 Blanc de...

Wow is right! What a great few days of wine tasting. Thanks for the fascinating read, Tim. I too have a question, about the Le Clos Chablis tasting. You mentioned a heaviness due to oak obscuring the terroir in the Billard Simon and Dauvissat. I thought oak was taboo in Chablis. Were these recent vi...

Re: New vintage ranking 1981-2010

Chris' ranking is identical to mine at this stage of the game. Of course, this is based on my limited personal exposure. I haven't drunk 100 or probably even 50 different wines from any of these vintages. I can see where someone might argue that 1982 shouldn't be ranked first because there were only...

I'm curious how many wines from each vintage were drunk to come to these conclusions. My rankings would look pretty different. But with only 10-20 wines some years, even fewer other years, and different ones in different years, my experience is hardly generalizable. I suspect you have a broader expe...

I bought a half-case of this as an early-drinking QPR, and figured it was time to crack one. Stefan's Thanksgiving post inspired me to write a note. I agree with Danny. If the ablation works and the fibrillation stops normal activities and diet can be resumed, no need for anticoagulants and no need to avoid alcohol, but in moderation, as in 12 oz of wine per day max. That's a general guideline, not intended as medical advice, disclaimer blah bla...

These are most likely tartrate crystals that precipitate out, often when the wine is chilled, and often seen in wine that has not been "cold-stabilized." Not at all an issue. I suppose it might reduce the acid in the balance a bit, as can sometimes be seen in wines that have been frozen af...

I've seen him at work, during our 2005 visit to France. It's a combination of corkscrew and hands-on grasping and regrasping of the cork at the lip of the bottle and teasing it upwards, which helps reduce the risk of it falling apart. I've found it helpful on old crumbly or spongy corks, even when u...

Hard for me to be objective about this - 1988 Bordeaux gets extra love from Peggy and me because it's our wedding year. But no, I don't think it's the best ever, even for that decade. I like 1982 and 1989 even better.

Wine Searcher shows low prices around $200 in Europe, $250 in the US. I could be wrong, but I don't think it will get much cheaper, and may even go up. I have no way of getting it into the US from Europe short of buying it over there, so I bought in the US.
