UPDATE 2016 Thivin Reverdon : OMG, this is awesome now! I froze 3/4 of the bottle for a few days, and this has been transformed. The grapey note is gone, and has been transformed into lovely savory, herbaceous and saison scents accented with an amazing topnote of fresh strawberries. Seems like ther...

Re: What are we drinking in lockdown?
Happy bday, Lisa... Last night we had two half bottles, a pretty overdone split of the 2003 Beaucastel CDP and surprisingly oaky 2005 Carbonnieux rouge . The Beaucastel had some redeeming features and we happily drank it, but it has an overripe nose of red wine reduction and some pruney notes. The C...

The election is only 29 weeks away. Just like in the 2018 midterm elections this far out from election day, it is becoming increasingly clear that the question is not if the Democrats will win in 2020, but how big their victory will be. Indeed, the results in the all-important state of Wisconsin’s e...

Wonderful note, Robert. Now I really want to try Roilette! I popped a 2016 Thivin Reverdon last night as part of my research. Honestly, while pretty good, this seems like it could use a few years to come together, as it is really grapey right now (with some of that Gamay candy David referred to abov...

Good to know, Nic. Are you a big fan too? Do cellar any bojo or just drink em up shortly after purchase? Age worthy Beaujolais used to be an oxymoron at least in conventional wine circles.Nicklasss wrote:All the ones cited are top.

It’s a good thing I don’t live in Europe or I’d quickly go broke backfilling... so many great prices on older vintages of bordeaux.

Thanks, gents. Just what I was looking for.
Looks like Crush has a bunch of these, including a number of the special cuvées (which I’ve yet to try) from Thivin for ~$30.
If I like the Thivin Brouilly classique, is it safe to assume I’ll like Roilette too?

Re: The Pontet Canet thread
For me, the issue with SHL is first and foremost the level of new oak. I gag on that, sort of like how GPL’s roast is a turnoff for you, Jacques. Plus I find SHL uber glossy, a trait I find very boring in a wine (if not an outright flaw like excess new oak). Finally, I’ve found some vintages of SHL ...

Any BWE love for Beaujolais?
As my AFWE cred deepens, I’ve become more enamored with Loire reds (always loved the whites) and Beaujolais even more so. It took the right vintage (2015 and 2016), but I finally saw the light on Thivin Brouilly — now I’m quite taken with it. Then a local wine buddy started opening some Côte du Py f...

Robert, what do you think of the mid-90’s Pontet Canet? From your post, it sounds like you like them. I guess I’d be surprised if you don’t like the 95 and 96.
Totally agree with you on the SHL, no surprise there, but for my palate that’s one of the worst wines in Bordeaux and has been since 2000.

Outside of the Timmy McCracken PC vertical in NYC (where we tasted up through the 02?), the only post-96 Pontet Canet vintages I’ve tried are the 02 and 03. The 1979 Haut Bailly is a great wine, was still singing a few years ago in nyc.
Popped a lovely 06 Mount Eden Chardonnay Estate for dinner. In a great spot, probably a little too big to make one think burgundy, but this is still balanced by plenty of brightness. 93+ pts.

At the UGC in 2019 tasting the 2016s, I noticed how little the merlot percentage was in virtually all of the Left Bank wines, and so I started asking assuming it was like the 86 or 96 vintage that really favored the cabernet. The wine makers virtually all said, no it was because global warming was m...

FWIW, I found the 02 Cos modern, unpleasantly so. We picked these up for like $35 at the MacArthur’s heist, but I still didn’t want them even at that price. I can only imagine what the 03 is like if the 02 showed this way.

The 90 P. Lichine was very good. Never had the 83, but the 82 is a credible wine. But it was always an inconsistent 4th growth at best.
It seemed they turned up their quality with the 2000 vintage. The 2005 is strong.

The challenge for me is I didn’t start buying good wine until 1995, and then I only had a grad school stipend to work with. So the first wines I could try on “release” had been on the shelves a few years, and I couldn’t afford the big names. But there were tons of inexpensive claret from 89 and 90 b...

Loved that 2014 Calon Segur you brought to BWE SanFran, Jim.
On release, a half bottle of the 2005 GPL was a wow wine.
The 1996 Leoville Las Cases was thrilling in 2008.

I’d rate even the subpar bottles of d’Yquem at least 91 pts, for sure Nic. I think it’s more that I consider 91 pts a disappointment... for a d’Yquem. I’ve rated the 95, 96 and 98 d’Yquem all 94-95 pts or higher. I’ve only had the 88 (consistently terrific) and 89 a few times each, and all bottles w...
